It says in the Manuel for this computer (Dell Dimension E521) that it can only go up to 4gb of ram but i had 5gb of ram in it and it showed on it in computer property's, so is this safe? it ran like this for a very long time does anyone know about this?
I want to do the same thing to my Dell Optiplex 380 and 320 is this still safe and possible?
any help would be much appreciated TY;)

its not working anymore but i assure you it had 5gb of ram and it said in computer properties and just wanted to know if anyone else out there has done it to and provide some info on it.

Oops, I guess I didn't read the second sentence... :o

The problem was probably that your old Dimension was a 32bit computer whereas the optiplex supports 64bits. This means that while your computer can see more than 4gb of ram, only 4 will be usable. Whereas a 64bit computer has a much, much larger limit.. Something like 16 terabytes.

In a nutshell, your optiplex will be perfectly fine with more than 4gb of ram.
