DVD drive not recognizing any discs

I apologize if i have created this thread in the completely wrong forum i have absolutely no idea where the DVD drive would come under! But A few months ago my laptop broke (the hard drive was completely worn out) and when i got it back the discs were playing fine. A lot of people say it doesn't recognise just blanks but it's literally everything. CD's and Computer games really. Occassionally 'My Computer' doesn't even recognise the drive and i have to click on it. Then when i do it says 'insert disc' even though i already have.
I have deleted the upper and lower filters and any cd burning devices that could be corrupting it. I've also run a full registry scan and fixed any errors yet the problem still persists. Please help me! :/

Can you insert any bootable OS CD/DVD and then try to boot from it? If your system boots up, it shows your DVD drive is working.

It may be an upper/lower filter problem. Try this fix: Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

Well i've deleted the upper and lower filters and my computer does sometime recognise the actual drive, its just the discs inside! Also i've tried running a Windows 7 cd/dvd and it hasn't recognised it, although i don't know how to boot from it? :S

Check your bios settings to see if your system sees it.
