On this system which has run smoothly for a long time, I've run into a failure to boot from CD
to do my backup job with old Ghost 11.5

I've tried a lot of things to get this backup started:

I have two ASUS cd/dvd drives and tried both. And two cds of the backup program.

I tried numerous cable swaps to the board and power supply too.
I cleared the CMOS, reset the clock etc.

Right now I will look again to see if the cd drive is seen in Windows...

Yes it is recognized and I saw the driver install.

As said this system is stable and I have not been making any changes.

But I cannot get the CD drive to run the backup program.

An alternative (not a pleasant one) is to set up a thumb drive and see if that works.

But why are all my CD boots across two different ASUS failing?

After the BIOS is set to boot from CD, POST runs and I get that black screen with a flashing
cursor. That's as far as it goes

I'm using the primary and backup HD now and running a single large file backup. But the
clone job is due for the main.

They are just two ASUS SATA drives. Sometimes noisy if I put in a DVD or something.

Please describe the cd check you want me to do. I looked in Device Manager but
did not see anything odd. The one thing I failed to do in testing is just look at a non boot

DVD/CD to see if that loads. But it looks to be at system someplace. I'll see what I can access
that is not a bootable CD as we go through this.

While waiting for reply I checked the ASUS and the program CD on another system. No problems.
It booted from the CD. CD/ DVD-- it's old hardware but how can that matter? My small programs are on CD.

It will make a difference if your dvd is legacey and the MB is set to uefi or it has secure boot set as that would stop it booting

I am doing a backup file that takes pretty long. But now UEFI on here. This board is
from 2009: An MSI 760GM. I habe a pdf manual. It was bought sort of new. I don't know
where my print manual is hiding.

In a pinch I could try plugging in my old IDE drive just to get the backup done. So far I am
not in a panic over data loss.

One other option is that I have an MSI 880GM motherboard as well. Perhaps I can do the transfer on it.

I only mention this for possible relevance:

One other thing has been a problem: the backup 2tb HD is Hitachi and my primary
source HD is Seagate. The Hitachi was bought used and seems to retain MBR info or
something even after a wipe with HDDGuru reformat tool. In other words the Hitachi does not
give a clean wipe. Just as an ask , is there a special Hitachi/deskstar whatevs reformatting tool?
I'll check in with HDDGuru as well.

Progress and possible success.

I followed your advice and checked the IDE AHCI setting in BIOS. It was not on AHCI so I set that.
I also had the system start in Fail Safe mode.

The ASUS is now loading and I'm running the backup program.

I will mark solved after the procedure runs.

Thanks for assistance.

That does the trick usually. It's a bit odd tho, most CDs I've had this problem on actually needed "IDE", not "AHCI". Remember to set it back after the backup is done if your normal OS refuses to boot.
