audiodg.exe what is it

i think this is the right section for this question. My question is what is audiodg.exe and why does it take so much cpu. When listening to itunes you think hmm the computer is runnibng a bit slow. Open task manager see 20% cpu or something for itunes and think ok whats using up all the cpu and this audiodg.exe is hogging 60%. Is there a way of reducing this. It is annoying for games and also for multitaking. The think i don't get i smy mp3 player dosn't need huge amounts of processing power to play the same stuff. Please help

I've been wondering why "audiodg" affect some systems so drastically and others barely at all. Audiodg uses a max of 3% CPU on my system when playing mp3 files with Winamp Classic.

Two things I can think of.

DSP (digital signal processing) used by either 1. The application or 2. The Windows OS, (which has built-in DSP.


First thing I would check is Windows Enhancements.

Right click on the MS speaker icon in the task bar, select "Playback Devices".
Single left click on the Default Output Device (Speakers?) with the green check mark.
Select the properties button.

Go to the Enhancements tab. Which enhancements are enabled? You will have to scroll down to see all of the enhancements available.

Also... there another DSP setting that has to do with "space" this is digital reverb and is usually on the same enhancements page at the bottom under settings. Disable all of the enhancements to see if they're causing the high CPU use, you will probably need to reboot after disabling.

Next... the program iTunes has a DSP enhancement as well.. it's under preferences, I forget the name as I do not use iTunes... it makes me gag. Anyway, check to make sure iTunes is not using the 3d enhancer spatial gizmo.. or whatever it's called.

The only other thing I can think of is a conflict with another background process, doubtful though.

For what I noticed it all comes down the what kind of sound card you have and drivers. For exampling using a generic sound card and generic drivers Windows is going to do all the DSP stuff on the CPU. On my system audiodg.exe hits 2-3% for a brief second returning to 0% on my internal card. Sigmatel STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio.

For my external sound card, equivalent to an addon card, audiodg.exe doesn't even bugle.

0% on the CPU and ~12 MB or ram when using Winamp or anything else (games, etc), with my Xtreme Music. Interesting tidbit, audiodg.exe only shows up in Task Manager when something is using the sound card, other than that it isn't there (and yes the service is set to auto and running).

It runs when any Windows compliant audio card (which uses Windows audio hooks) is playing sound.

Try quitting audiodg in task manager, you will probably lose audio.

I have one audio card... an older RME PCI card that does not hook itself into the windows audio system, if I set it as the default audio device in Winamp, audiodg does not run.

I think people that are seeing a lot of CPU use are using a lot of the background DSP stuff.

Thanks a lot. Only used itunes at the moment as test, not looked into games but it worked, after turning off all enhancemants and turning sound quality to cd quality from a very high studio quality under advanced i think it should be enough. CPU down to 3% and peaks at 6%

I think you should be able to use 44.1 or 48kHz at 24-bit under the advanced tab without a performance hit.
