Hi All,
I have just bought a new HP Pavilion desktop with Windows 7 on it. I cannot get my email to work on Windows Live Mail. I am using a ADSL router to get broadband.
Internet works fine. I imported all my settings from my IBM Thinkpad which is runing XP. I have tried reinstalling the CD which came with the router, but this is about 4 years old, before Windows 7 & did not fix the problem.

Another forum gave a solution to download a Vista RAS PPPoE driver & replace this in the System32 drivers folder. When I try this, I get a message "You need permision to perform this action"

Can anyone help. I have wasted a lot of time on this now. Appears to be another block in the way of all potential solutions.
Regards,
Bravo

1. Your first problem: Windows mail cant receive email.

What error it is giving? As I guess you are using a faster internet connection, I am not thinking about time out problem.

2. I cant get yout second question. Please write a bit more...what you going to install and thats do not work?

3. For your third question: "You need permission..."

If you want to follow that method, you must take ownership (click here to read the tutorial) of the file and folders you want to replace.

Lastly, welcome to Sevenforums :D

Since your internet is working, I wouldn't worry about PPPoE. Personally, I never import settings, only email messages and contacts. Use Tools/Accounts and check all the tabs to make sure they agree with your email provider's instructions for setting up POP3 or IMAP accounts just as though you were starting all over with a new email provider. The main one is the server tab.

Hi all,
I checked my settings with Telecom & changed a couple as they directed, but no change. I still get error 651
after failure to connect. I can get e-mail in Yahoo Xtra on my proper e-mail address but not on Windows Live Mail. I tried the RAS PPPoE driver replace after getting the take ownership downloads. This resulted in the error changing to 813 .... You have attempted to open a second Broadband connection while a previous one is already established using the same device port. I have changed the RAS PPPoE driver back to the orriginal now, & back to error 651.
Any help would me appreciated.
Regards,
Bravo

Hi All,

My setup is different than yours, but it sounds like your ISP is making your computer do their job. Most ISP's in the US provide either a cable modem (from a cable company) or a router (from a DSL provider). In either case these boxes provide an Ethernet port. Your computer's Ethernet jack plugs into this port using a normal Ethernet cable. The ISP's box on your premises (modem or router) connects to their stuff on their premises. No CD needs to be installed on your PC and your PC should see the Internet as soon as you plug it in as long as your network card and drivers are good. You shouldn't have to worry about PPPoE or RAS mumbo jumbo. Nevertheless, you say you have Internet connectivity. So any email program should be able to use that connectivity to download email as long as it has the correct servername, username, and password for your email account.

The only time I've had to worry about the mumbo jumbo is when I'm using my computer's built-in WWAN (cellular data modem) and some of the Windows Services it uses are not able to be turned on due to some obscure Windows file corruption issue. In that case a Windows reinstall may be needed. If you really want to keep an ISP that makes you install a CD on your PC, you may have to verify the CD is compatible with your version of Windows.

Hi all,
My problem is fixed. I called Telecom again who got me to download a diagnostic program from them & they also got me to turn of the dial up option. All good now.
Thanks for your time.
Best regards,
Bravo
