How can I track the computers who are connected to my computer?

I was about to turn my laptop last night and all of a sudden a window popped out saying that if I turn my laptop off, the computers that are connected to my laptop are going to get disconnected and wont finish their transfer. So i thought one of my buddies are just trying to copy my file. I woke up this morning and the all the files in that certain folders where I keep my music and movies are gone! What should I do?

what connection do you have? if it is wireless do you have it secured with a WEP or better a WPA(2) key?

Yes it is wireless. I think that is the problem. I don't have any WEP/WPA(2) key. How can I do that?

You need to go into your routers setup/security and select WPA2 Personal as your means of encryption... it will ask you for a password (key)... dont lose it...DONT give it out!!! Let your friends get their own media files..

@ TEWS: We all share the same network. Me and 7 of my buddies here in Afghanistan(We're deployed here as soldiers). I'm not the main computer that controls the router thou.

if you are are lucky there are common username password combinations that will allow you to have access to the router. do you know what make or model the router is? but it sounds like you need to tell the admin to lock it up and give you a key for access.

1. Open a command prompt:
Win XP - go to start >> run >> type CMD >> Click OK
Win Vista/7 - go to start >> type CMD then press enter.

2. In the black window type ipconfig and make note of the default gateway address e.g. 192.168.1.xxx

3. Open Internet explorer and type that address in and press enter

Now... if you are lucky it will just load the router config and you will then be able to set a password, if it asks for a username/password (this will be the router password, not the wireless password) then you will need to speak with the user that set it up.

*Note* just be careful what you do in the router settings... its not hard to make things worse

If you do not want to share your files with the other users of the network and you cannot gain access to the router or the admin for the system there are a few things you can do.

On vista and windows 7 if you go into networking and sharing centre and set your network type to public, (this is a bit of a misnomer as it actually states that you are in a public place and sets the security to maximum). This setting will still allow you internet access but prevent network access to your PC.

If you still want to retain network sharing but control what access others have this can be done using sharing and file permissions - if you need to do this let us know and we can give more specific instructions
