Internet Explorer 9 beta: The beauty of the web

Status
Not open for further replies.
While using IE9 for about a day, during the time application is in use I have been getting a prompt stating that the Performance level is low; switch to windows classic theme.
I have now reverted back to IE8 and would like to see if this message was related to the new version.
To uninstall I have to go to 'installed update' and do it.

It's beta! Just like anything else in beta form that means "unfinished". The idea however is a preview as well as being able to provide feedback to MS where the bugs remaining can be looked at long before the final version is out. You have to stick with a beta for a period of time to get an idea of what the final version will be like.

Simply logging onto the home page here earlier was a bit sluggish but that has been seen with IE 8 as well as other browsers looked at the local connection or home page site is busy. That will lower any performance with any browser.

Alright guys...somebody asked me how I got IE9 64-bit as my default browser and the answer is, by going into "Internet Options" >> "Programs" >> "Make default". It tells you you can't do it, but in reality you can. My screenshots:

I set IE9 as default:

If the 64 bit is open, click on a link in an email, it opens in the 64 bit browser in a new tab. This leads me to believe the 64 bit is the default.

If no browsers are open, the link is opened in the 32 bit browser, leading me to believe the 32 bit browser is the default.

This might explain the difference in results when trying to set IE 9 64 bit as default - or not.

There are issues with this feature. They have been reported on Microsoft Connect. It appears there might be an issue if Windows Live Essentials in installed.

@ Night Hawk: This is, of course, very true.

At times I can see why some people prefer non-Microsoft products, especially when web browsers come into question. I can fully understand that Firefox and Chrome seem like better browsers in terms of user customization, extensions and add-ons, themes etc.

Microsoft simply brings additional functionality to using Windows 7 itself by implementing features like the new "pinning websites to taskbar", something that nobody else thought of, and probably wouldn't have... ever.

Everything is about taste, hence the browser wars between users/A/V wars/console fanboys/Mac smart***es etc.
Taste is something that cannot and should not be discussed... ever! and many people don't know the difference between taste and expressing an opinion.

I will say it one last time: There is no such thing as the best browser, or any other piece of software, for that matter; the point of being a computer user is to develop your own taste as well as opinion, and use your PC the way you want, not like others tell you to. And you can only achieve that by stepping up and testing for yourself, something that many people don't want to do, instead just sticking to their opinion not wanting to face the fact that their taste can change.

My opinion:
IE9 is awesome! It looks good, it performs just as fast as any other browser, regardless of all benchmark results, and occasional bugs, issues, etc. All browsers have them, don't let anybody else force you to think otherwise. Development is slower than any other browser, but just as we witnessed the incredible step-up that is Windows 7, so shall we witness the same thing with the final version of IE9, I don't have any doubts about it!

My taste:
Google Chrome, but with a big chance to change once the final IE9 comes out.

Um, Your screnshoot matches what I see? It says you can't make IE (64 bit) the default browser and make default is greyed out. So how do you make it default if you can't click the button?

Thats what I'm seeing too, if IE 9 64 bit is already open links will just open a new tab. But is every other senario IE 9 32 bit opens, so that would indicate to me that the 32 bit version is the default.

Posting from it now, will see how things go, the main part will be if it works with my shopping site and my bank, I know it works OK with Roboform as I used it to login here, although I had an update to Roboform before I carried on with the download of IE9.

I'll just use it in it's default setup to start with to see how it goes before I do any alterations.;)

still haven't installed it yet. From reading a couple random pages, seems like people like it for daily use, but for certain things, it's still buggy? I think I'm okay with that.

Can't wait till flash gets 64bit support in IE8/9!

That is exactly what I was referring to. Can't wait!

Why wait? The preview works now, in all of IE8 and IE9 64 bit and the Firefox 4 x64 beta/nightly build. Just download and install the appropriate one, or both if using IE and Firefox.

Alright guys...somebody asked me how I got IE9 64-bit as my default browser and the answer is, by going into "Internet Options" >> "Programs" >> "Make default". It tells you you can't do it, but in reality you can. My screenshots:

Um, Your screnshoot matches what I see? It says you can't make IE (64 bit) the default browser and make default is greyed out. So how do you make it default if you can't click the button?

It's greyed out because I already clicked it, making IE9 64-bit the default.

Thats what I'm seeing too, if IE 9 64 bit is already open links will just open a new tab. But is every other senario IE 9 32 bit opens, so that would indicate to me that the 32 bit version is the default.

The beauty of betas.
