Use a real anti-virus / firewall :P

Windows 7 <= Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows 7.
This AV has the highest detection rate of virii, period.
It also incorporates a firewall.

Select "Activate Beta License" after install.

Consider yourself lucky then. If it did install, you would have ended up with a system without net access at best, or a system that will not boot.

To Checkpoint's credit, they state that they do not support Windows 7 yet. In this case, they're really not kidding lol.

ZA is just rat ****.
It doesn't support ANY os properly.
Every time i've tried to use it personally, or dealt with a customer who's got it they always face the same unbeatable problems;

1) The filtering rules allows unlimited access to the internet/network but programs are still blocked.
2) Program X is allowed unlimited access to the internet/network, but it is blocked. (:@!)
3) Can't un-install ZoneAlarm, it crashes or spits out an error message =/

That's nonsense. I've been using it for my exact needs which are somewhat above basic, for many years XP through Vista. It has always performed very well, if not perfectly for me. And I almost have always run beta, too.

Number 3, alright, that may be true. To get around this, I use another OS to boot from (safe mode from same OS would work too), delete all the files from the system (in program files and windows\system32), remove the service by hand if the uninstaller that froze did not lol, delete the Windows\Internet Logs folder, and then run a reg clean. Then a new install is possible, if ever needed.

Feel lucky? That's all the advice i can give you.
You're in the minority.

Considering the Skilled badge, i'd be more inclined to say it's a representation of your skill rather than a representation of the stability of the software in question.

Thanks for the Kaspersky link ! I might just use this.

The reason why I want to use Zonealarm/Bitdefender is because they are the only ones with Identity theft protection, they allow me to encrypt my passwords so they never reach the internet.. And after 3 times people hacked into my uploading service accounts and forum accounts, I am starting to insist on these features...

Well.. if people are hacking your online accounts it's because they've used one of two procedures;

Hacked the online server directly. In this case, you can't do anything about it whatsoever. Any problem with accounts must be taken up with the holder, e.g Rapidshare

Hacked your PC. In this case, they absolutely without question must have had some very custom software on your pc. Symantec corporate (not norton) and kaspersky should both have a very good success rate at picking up custom trojans, yet it's still important to familiarise yourself with the tasks in the task managers' process list and what they do.

Finally, keep your PC clean with Spybot Search and Destroy and lavasofts' Ad-aware. Don't use anything else as alternatives a're often malicious, misleading fakes like WinAntivirus 2008 and Adware - Those ones for example, actually installs MORE spyware on your PC.

Thanks ! Just downloaded Spybot and cleaned the computer !
Right now I am trying to install the kaspersky and I am having problems, it's telling me the Avast I had before is not uninstalled even though I did it and reboot twice...

I asked the same question on the "Best AV" thread, if anyone has an answer to this, please post it there for other's people's sake, because I know most use Avast.

ZoneAlarm doesn't stop you from getting virii, nor does it have an anti-virus database =/

It's a firewall nothing more, it only stops unauthorised software from accessing zones outside of your own PC e.g the local network and internet.

Yes it does. It has full Kaspersky built into it, with updates like every hour or two available. I'm talking about the Security Suite version. A properly configured ZoneAlarm on an XP or Vista system is top notch.

That, I agree with. (properly configured)

There really isn't a perfect or best firewall or antivirus that can keep a computer from getting infected by a drive-by .swf banner, "malvertizing", or an infected web page, or DNS redirection.... so it really is up to the person in the chair (behind the computer) to configure their anti-malware tools to help protect them.

*** notice the word, "help" ;)

Those stop the teachniques you're talking about jacee.

Also, I don't know what AV you're using... but every time i've copped one of those Symantec Corp has picked it up with no troubles.

I still have several files in my quarantine, source location is the Firefox Cache :roflmao:

Now if i were using IE6 or 7, then instead of just getting a bad temp file in my cache, some websites actually launched a software install automatically, so there was a far bigger risk to using IE than FF ever will have.

for now, i'm just navigating safe trusted sights with IE8... i really should browser test this however. Laters

Then that's not ZA is it? That's kaspersky.
ZA does not protect you from virii.

Ya. On my downstairs pc, my family likes to play some MS games from msn.com so I "allow" lol them to use IE8.

They then take the liberty of browsing elsewhere sometimes, even though they know better, and I end up with a minor problem or two. FF is configured with all the goodies and they are supposed to and usually use that. I don't run any AV on here besides default built-in service because it's only a 1.5 GHz P4 on 7 and don't need cycles eaten up. So I have a really really long hosts file lol and consider the effort I put into maintaining worth it as opposed to putting AV on there for them.

I get what you mean about ZA and Kaspersky sexytool. Come on though! lol If I install something that says ZA and end up with AV/spyware protection, then I fully consider ZA to be protecting from malware.

I'm a long time Steve Gibson reader. I think he made me paranoid too. haha I like Stealth mode of ZA and have been using it ever since he started to recommend it. Then it was sold and for certain specific reasons, he stopped doing that.
