I have windows 7, it's a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, and I can't find the settings anywhere to disable the friggin' thing.

Other people have tried to help in the past by saying it's in the control settings under moue configuration. It's NOT there. I've searched for it and it's nowhere to be seen.

Can anybody help?

bty, my thumb touched the stupid pad even while writing this and made my start typing over what i've already written. Which is exactly why I hate the stupid thing.

In the control panel, are you viewing all items or just the short list view? It may not show up in the default, compressed list view.

If you don't have a button to release the all thing (mine have one, to lock the touchpad), you might have to uninstall the Synaptics drivers from control panel "Add & Remove Programs".

At reboot this will not work anymore.

In Device Manager, disable Synaptics Touchpad device.

I do not recommend doing this as you lose the backup to your mouse and will need another mouse in order to get into the Device Manager to turn it back on.

Another example is my notebook mouse lost its ablity to click and drag text on the beach the other day while editing a forums post here. I needed the touchpad to do it until I could get new batteries into the mouse.

You can generally access settings through the control panel. Open up Mouse Settings from the control panel, move over to the Device Settings tab and you should be able access touchpad settings in there.

Depending on the make and model of your laptop you should find options such as "disable touchpad when an external USB pointing device is connected", which would help if you use a USB mouse and want to disable the touchpad when a USB mouse is connected. You should also be able to disable the touchpad entirely from here

Also can try touchfreeze, disables touch pad while you are typing:

Touchfreze

It does work w/ Windows 7.

I appreciate the help from everyone, really. Unfortunately, I've tried everything everyone has said (except the fn-f4 guy. I was confused about that one), and nothing worked. I saws no option to change my touchpad settings. And for some weird reason, i couldn't download synaptics.

However, the last poster, A Guy, gave me Touchfreeze. And it's EXACTLY what I needed. This is awesome! So if i forget to bring my mouse to class i can still use my touchpad and it won't interfere with my typing! brilliant! thanks A Guy!

:roflmao:

Nice.
Do you see on your laptop keyboard a small key labeled FN? It is generally in blue, and it is the key that is used (like SHIFT) to access secondary commands on the keyboard.
After checking mine, the FN+F3 is the key combo to turn off my touchpad. Some laptops also have a little button over the touchpad to turn it off.

Make more sense?

Sounds like your mouse software/drivers aren't installed...
Do you see this icon in your systray?
Screenshot
If not, look on Dell
edit: this is a general Inspiron 1525 search, use your serial number for updated software specific to your machine for better results.
Once that's installed, right click your mouse software tray icon and choose > Pointing Device Properties > Device Settings tab (far right tab) > Middle of window: Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached
Screenshot

Vaio Windows 7 64

I have read all the actions of this and other threads and none work. Vaio even has the "Disable" button de-activated, so the Touchpad cannot be disabled. There is no key on the keyboard to do this action as there was on my last computer.

Has anyone solved this for a Vaio (sony) laptop?

Joggernot

PS: my wife found this information and it works. Apparently Vaio has its own control center that is separate from the Control Panel.

where?

Same problem. no touchpad-specific drivers are on the system as far as I can tell: brand new toshiba Satellite with Win7 Pro 64-bit, all factory-loaded. As far as I can tell the touchpad is treated by Windows 7 as a mouse. No options except typical mousey options.

What is Touchfreeze? builtin to Windows 7 or aftermarket?

Also can try touchfreeze, disables touch pad while you are typing:
Good one.. it's so damn annoying when my thumb hits the touch pad while I'm typing something

ok. and that Fn+Key works under Windows 7?
On this particular satellite, for the record, its supposed to be Fn+F9

It is a hardware feature, not software.

Disable/Enable the TouchPad via the Vaio Control Center

SONY Support gave me the solution -
Go to Start, find VAIO CONTROL CENTER(VCC) (in Search). Then click POINTING DEVICE, click OR unclick ENABLE box. Then hit APPLY. It works instantly. No need to ReStart.
I pin it (the VCC) in my Start Menu for easy access (so I can click/unclick ENABLE depending on whether I'm using an external mouse).
