Restore from Backup Image failing, mounting with vhdmount...

So I had a hard disk crash last night. TOTALLY RUINED my Friday, been messing with it all day basically.

Got a new HD, SSD this time!
Couldn't restore to SSD, read lots of articles/threads about Win7 restore and SSD
Installed Win7 to SSD
Still couldn't restore, keeps saying couldn't find a system disk to restore to.
Tried to restore to a spare HDD, couldn't restore to that either.
Installed Win7 on that, tried to restore, still same error.

Finally booted into Win7 and mounted my backup image using vhdmount (installed via Virtual Server SP1 pkg, then attached via disk manager). I can now get my files off of it (had to mess with permissions first of course) but I would RATHER restore from this image vs. manually copy the files off onto my new C:\Windows install.

I'm wondering either how do I fix this issue so Win7 restore can restore the image to my new HDD or SSD, or else how can I manually copy all files to new C:\ and make it boot, just do it and run startup repair from DVD?

Also, the "backup image" is actually "C:\;I:\" - somehow it thought my I:\ was a system drive (common problem for Win7 Bkup) and so now it is both. I tried restoring and thought maybe I needed my I:\ in place. It's a SimpleDrive USB 500GB so I turned it on but that didn't help either, although it changed the drives it tried to restore to both. I tried to exclude I:\ no dice. I used diskpart all day and am now an expert I guess, and tried to change partitions and muck with mbr, no dice. Using compatibility mode in BIOS for SATA, no dice!! =\

Any ideas??

Cliff notes: I either need to resolve restore process error due to not finding system disk (weird error) or else manually copy files out of back image (mounted with vhdmount and working) to my new C:\ and somehow "repair" windows to boot off that manually restored filesystem.

I have a very simillar problem.

My hdd crashed and I put in a new one. Win7 Ultimate 64bit is reporting the same error to me.

I actualy figured out the problem with my original HDD and have re-installed that yet I am getting the same error. How does that work?

If you have also upgraded to a SSD drive, you need to go to the manufacturer's website and look for firmware updates for the drive.
Most SSD's require firmware updates out of the box, they will generally fix most problems you'll have with them.

If your (system, active) partition was on a different drive to your OS (Boot,..) drive when the image was made then restoring to a single drive may be a problem.
