Repair Install shuts down and doesn't startup again

Hi there,

I've been trying to do a system REPAIR INSTALL, following the tutorial. My system goes through the process up to the point where it is supposed to be transferring the settings. At that point it shuts down and does not start up again. The next process if it did start up would be to put in my installation key.

Before trying the Repair Install I tried the STARTUP REPAIR and went through that 3 times; it finished the third time with no errors. The first time I ran it though, it found this error:

Root cause found:
Bugcheck c000021a Parameters = 0xfffff8a00450e330, 0x0
0xffffffffe00000001, 0x100540
Root critical file is corrupt

Repair action File repair failed; error code = 0x2

Repair action System restore failed; error code = 0x1f

Repair action system files integrity check and repair failed;
error code = 0x40

Any suggestion what to do next? I was seriously trying to avoid doing a complete reinstall if possible.

Thank you.

Start your computer with the DVD in tray to see if it will resume Repair. Doubtful.

Next boot the DVD into Repair, accept any offered Repair, boot back in to Startup Repair if necessary to try running it a few times. It might have enough of an installation to repair.

If not, see if you can copy out your files if you failed to back them up already: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/93347-copy-paste-windows-recovery-console.html

Then wipe the HD to clean reinstall Win7: SSD - HDD Optimize for Windows Reinstallation

Hello Kimbolini, welcome to Seven Forums!

Have a look at this tutorial at the link below, if you haven't already, sometime it is needed to run several times to complete successfully.

How to Repair Windows 7 System Files with System File Checker

Thanks for the suggestion Bare Foot. It seems I am now unable to log into Windows at all, it goes into a loop of either trying the repair windows (I've run that a couple of times), or "start Windows as normal" option (doesn't work, it tries to initiate but then shuts down after offering to send a message to MS about the problem). So, I'm unable to try the System File Checker that you pointed me to.

You are correct!

Yep I tried that a few times already, but alas it has not worked in the end.

Well I guess I am going to have to do this, which is what I was trying to avoid.

Thanks for your help.

Okay I have decided to do the complete clean-install. I've reformatted the HD, and the system install starts up and appears to begin installing. Then at some point it shuts itself down and does not start up again.

This is what I see happening:

Process goes through "copying Windows files" (check)
Expanding Windows files (check)
Installing features (check)
Installing updates (check)
restarts
****white on black window shows Windows 7 loaded twice)****
Completing installation
restarts
Windows can not configure on this computers hardware
shutdown

Hello again Kimbolini.

First.

If the Windows 7 install disk is one you burned yourself it may be a bad burn and needs to be done again, if so this would be the first thing to try.

Use the free ISO burner at the link below to burn another at a speed of now more than 4x and select to let the program to verify the disk before it finishes.

ImgBurn Free ISO Burner

Second.

A format 'removes' nothing from the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) as is widely believed and old Windows code could be causing issues, this causes problems in about half of the issues we see and a wipe "secure erase" sorts it; have a look at the info below.

Be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.
   Information

After you have made backups of everything you care to save and you want to do a real wipe "secure erase" to the Hard Disk Drive (HDD) have a look at this tutorial at the link below, it over-writes everything, all the old Windows code including the old Windows drivers, everything all data, giving you the best possible space to install Windows 7 to; it goes hand-in-hand with a clean install.

Hello again,

I have followed the tutorial for optimizing the system for clean install. Then, followed the tutorial for a clean install of Windows 7. (I didn't re-burn the ISO file, as I have to download it again; I am a student and had to get the files again through my college. I thought though that the original disk was fine as it was successfully installed before on both my computers, and finding all my passwords etc. to do that was very time consuming.)

This is what happened; it went through the process of installation - got as far as the final restart, shut down and did not come back up.

Since the Windows 7 install didn't work, I installed Windows Vista, just to see if that works, as a way to see if it is perhaps the HD itself. And, Eureka, it installed! So I guess it was my Windows 7 installation disk. Lesson learned.

Thanks so much for your help!

Newest development:

I purchased a retail copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and tried to install it. It went through the process, up to the point of the final restart, but did not restart. When I turned it on again, I received the message that the installation was not successful. Changes made during the installation are being undone. The system reverted back to the Vista OS.

Once again I tried to load the Windows 7 OS, but this time it did not revert to Vista and also did not boot. It seems to be "on", as the PC on light is lit, but there is nothing on the screen, although the monitor light is on as well. I am just going to leave it for now... I can hear the drive doing something. Will post again in the morning.

Are you trying to in-place Upgrade Vista to Win7?

If so, try clean installing instead from booted Win7 DVD. Make sure your Win7 DVD is bootable - if not, burn another using ImgBurn at 4x speed.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

A clean install using the commercial disk just purchased yesterday.

So just to be absolutely certain it wasn't a hardware issue I have reinstalled Vista, got it up and running with internet. This tells me that it isn't a hardware issue, and besides 7 was up and running just a day ago.
My next step is to remove hardware bits...video card is out and 6gb of RAM, leaving the minimum 2gb for 7 and a very stripped down machine, and try to reinstall 7. I'll just do it over the basic Vista install.

So I'm in hurry and wait mode for a bit.

Not sure it was a clean install attempt if it rolled back to Vista installation. Sounds like a failed in-place Upgrade.

Have you tried booting the Win7 DVD to Custom install, using Drive Options to delete and format new partition? http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1649-clean-install-windows-7-a.html

The HD may even need to be wiped of conflicting code: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91339-ssd-hdd-optimize-windows-reinstallation.html
When creating partition after Create Partition Primary command, add "Select Partition 1," "Format" then "Active.

If you know you've not tried the in-place Upgrade from Vista, you can of course try that too.

While you have Vista, make sure you have the latest BIOS version update from computer or mobo model's Support Downloads webpage. If so, reset the CMOS: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/tp/clearcmos.htm

Remove all but 2gb of RAM, test your RAM using memtest86 CD for 5-6 passes, then test your HD using maker's full diag/repair CD scan: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

:thumbsup:I am pleased to report that the use of a small calibre weapon was not required.
I believe elsewhere on this fine forum somebody had mentioned that W7 had trouble with lots of RAM when installing, so with most RAM out and the ATI 4650 Vid card out, Win7 loaded a treat.

I put the RAM and video card back in, but after the initial boot up screen got black, yet the HD seemed to be working away. Out comes the video card, plug back into the MB jack and bingo Windows 7 in all it's glory.

So, I've at least tracked down a faulty video card, although I'll try it later in another machine running Vista and see if it is just a 4650 vs W7 thing or the card is in fact junk.

As gregrocker just suggested, and I think it was the problem, the excess of RAM for the install was what held it up.

Now whether this freshly installed W7 solves my original problem of being unable to delete some programs and the random shutdown I will have to wait and see because there are a LOT of programs to install.

Just want to say thanks to everybody that gave me advice I learned alot and I've bookmarked this forum.

Suggest you take your time installing programs to gauge performance changes after each.

Don't let any programs write themselves into msconfig>Startup besides AV and gadgets/stickynotes if u use em. Others become freeloaders on your Startup, RAM and CPU and can spy on you.

Use a free lightweight AV like MS Security Essentials with the Windows firewall for no impact on resources. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

Monitor errors in Event Viewer>Admin View to google repeat errors to resolution.

Clean and order the HD perfectly using state-of-the-art CCleaner and Auslogics Disk and REgistry defraggers. Then save externally a Win7 backup image so you never have to reinstall again. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/663-backup-complete-computer-create-image-backup.html

Thanks for the advice Greg and I will surely take it!
