ati radeon 8500 32 mb, 512 ram and pentium 4 1.8 ghz

can i run win 7 on that and will it be fast with disabled aero?

And there will be little to no drivers for any of it. That old Raedon 8500 at best will have to use the last XP driver, and if it is an AGP card, then you better hope either the native Windows AGP driver or the last XP one will install and work, or you can forget about the video card driver ever installing.

All things considering, you would be better off waiting on Windows 7 until you have a computer that isn't almost a decade old.

If the upgrade advisor, gives you a clean bill of health, then install and then we can worry about performance.

1 GB of ram is the minimum practical amount of ram and 2 GB is much better.

If you already have a windows 7 DVD and just want to test the waters. I think you can install without entering a product code or activating. You should then be able to play around with it for 30 days. You don't want to get your OEM product code tied to it and find out its not usable.

True. In fact, if the computer can't run Win 7 he will get rejected quite early in the game.

I suggest doing what karlsnooks has posted. It will save you a lot of time, 512 mgs won't get the job done for sure. I don't think you system will pass in several ways.

Yes, I would run the upgrade adviser first. I was assuming he or she would. It'll tell you what drivers you need to hunt up. The minimum system specs listed on this page >

I don't know if it will actually refuse to install on lower specs than that though. Oh and the download on that page is good for 90 days and is from Microsoft so you won't get any bonus extras that you don't want.

I don't know if it is still true with the RTM but back in the RC days you could actually run with less than stated minimums.

I would never recommend less that 1 GB and, as previously stated, I consider 2 GB to be a practical minimum, but the Upgrade Advisor will advise him of any and all shortcomings of his computer.

Actually, you can run some OSes at below min requirements, just the performance hit is so bad, that you would pretty much go 'geh' and give up. The minimum specs are generally what is recommended to be functional, and even then, it is not 'ideal' versus the recommended, which tends to be about 2x the memory and sometimes 1.5 to 2x the processor speed.

Recycling older hardware but using a newer OS for simplicity sake. Some companies might want to recycle older hardware for callcenter terminals and do away with XP in general.
