Hello,

Maybe there is no connection but I recently had to remove and reinstall Norton Antivirus, part of it was corrupted.

Now when I boot the machine I am getting the warning sound related to "Windows Hardware Fail" or Device Failed to Connect." I get those 4 times at 30 sec intervals then they stop. Looking at Device Manager I see 4 yellow triangles with exclamation points in them, under Portable Devices. This is my memory card reader. In spite of this the reader works fine and I can read and write data to it as needed.

Clicking on one or all of them I get the message "Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)"

So the question is should I remove all the offending drive's H:\ ...I:\...J:\....K:\ and reboot hoping 7 will find the reader? Or run System File Checker?

In all fairness I don't normally boot the machine with the sound on, I only turn it on when I need it so this condition may have been there for a while, honestly I don't know.

Thanks to all in advance!

I would do a System Restore and see if that resolves your problems.
Did you use Norton Removal Tool? You should and then reinstall it.

I did use the Remove and Reinstall tool from Norton, but the Restore Point was made when I was having trouble with Norton.

If I revert to that one, it may fix the memory card dilemma but it will leave me with a botched Norton and I'd have to start over again removing and reinstalling. If the Norton Removal program was the root cause, then I'd only be doing the same thing again with a similar result.

I only mentioned the RnR of Norton because that was the latest thing I did to the machine, it may just be a coincidence.

Thank you,

JT

Pick a restore point before you R&R'd Norton. After years in this business Norton is :zip:
I then say whatever works for you may not work for another. To each their own. ;)
Good luck.

Baddog22556,

I was able to sort it out and now I have no more exclamation marks or beeping. I chose to "update the driver" and this this time I let Windows search and lo and behold it found some that work. Thought I had done this before and it didn't fly, but now it did.

I agree with you abt Norton, if they weren't giving it to me I wouldn't use it.

Thanks for your service btw!!

Cheers,

J T
