ATI Radeon HD5450 driver crashing to BSOD on boot

Hi All,

Im new to this forum so not sure if this is in the right topic.

I have an Acer Aspire AX3810 running windows 7 home premium 64bit. I have 7gb DDR3 Memory and an ATI Radeon HD5450 graphics card.

A few weeks ago before upgrading windows and my memory I began getting BSOD errors about the graphics driver on boot up. This would occur every now and then and then boot up normally with no problems at all during running the system.

This problem seemed to occur out of the blue. I noticed that there was a new driver released so tried updating it, but still had the same problem. I upgraded windows and added 4gb more memory. This still has not assisted. the problem is now nearly every boot up, with the system going to BSOD, then re-booting itself then straight into windows and everything works fine, graphics card shows as working, driver shows as working and up to date.

Does anyone know why my driver could be crashing on and only on boot up. Its getting rather annoying now.

You must have mis-matched RAM since you have 7GB, an odd amount. It could be causing the BSODs too.
Some hardware tests to run.
Follow this precisely, it may take a few hours to do 7 passes.

RAM (memory):
This will require memtest on a bootable CD or USB stick.
RAM - Test with Memtest86+

ill re-run it now. How long does it take as the tool window has been open for a while now and it wont move if dragged. The bottom bar is fully green and has been for ages.

Hi,

Thanks for the added info, please carry out britton30's suggestion and run memtest as your system specs inform me that it should be 8GB installed. Please run this at night before you go to bed as it may take a while.

Also please update to Windows 7 Service Pack 1 as it will help stabalise your system.

The majority of your crashes report Stop 0x116 errors: Graphics related issues.
Please follow this troubleshooting guide for this particular error:

One of the suggested tests is the memtest, so i would suggest you start with that test first.

Hi Dave, thanks ill do that tonight and will let you know tomorrow. The 8gb is what the MB will take. The machine only came with 3gb but when I upgraded windows I bought 4gb more ram

4 sticks, 3x2gb 1x1gb. But the problem occurred a few weeks before I upgraded the RAM and windows. It started mid January when I was running Vista on 3gb RAM.

Yes update to SP1 first, then update your driver:

Well done the Mem test, 7 passes (14 hrs), windows S1 installed and the new graphics driver. Still having the problem.

Here is the latest dmp info etc after the mem test and S1 install. The BSOD seem to of stopped though the system takes around 3 attempts to boot (resets itself just before profile log on screen). On the log on screen sometimes it now shows a few sections of lines about half and inch square in 2-3 places.
