USB drive connecting and disconnecting constantly

I recently purchased a OCZ Diesel 8GB USB drive and i plugged it into my computer and at first everything was fine then I tried to transfer some files onto it and kept hearing the "dadum...Dadum" as the drive kept connecting and disconnecting and now when I plug it in it wont stop doing that. Any suggestions on how I can stop this from happening or do I need to return the drive?
I tried different usb ports on the front and back of my case and I put in my old USB and it worked fine. I also tried it on another computer and when installing the drivers it got hung up on "searching pre configured driver folders" and the same thing happened.

Maybe a hardware issue... you USB may be damaged (if you are on warranty, use it and change the USB)
Have you tried on other OSes and PC's? (beide the one you mention) just to discard USB connectors failure.

See ya!!! :D

It's probably NOT your hardware...

I've been plugging in USB sticks to my machine for a LONG time, and only recently, I've run into the problem that it keeps trying to mount the device over ... and over ... and over.

It even claims that the drive needs to be scanned and every time I do that, it comes back with no errors.

Yeah ... it's REALLY aggravating because if there is a file transfer going on while it is trying another one of its remounts, the transfer fails!

Plus, it only happens with USB sticks. USB hard drives do not present this problem.

So far, I've found no solution to this aggravation.

Good point mark, but he tested in many PC's, not that many will get this exact same problem... better for him to use his warranty... hopefully this will solve all his issues.

Sometimes, some kind of devices has certain issues with certain systems, for xample, I got a 8 GB Kingston Datatraveler 100 USB stik, that refuses to write in any of my laptops USB ports, but in my desktop works flawlessly... maybe a file system problem, or maybe needs a complete wipe, but by now my other 8 GB A-DATA USB stick works perfectly in both PC's... curious eh?

See ya!!! :D

I have had all kinds pf problems on my MSI K9A2GM Quad phenom motherboard. Searching the net I concluded the USB 2 implementation in AMD chiset was the problem. I just stuck a via chip set USB2 pci card laying around. I use it for all my removable drives. Problem solved.

One thing though, never again am I buying a motherboard with AMD chip set. No such problems on nVidia motherboards.

Just tossing this out there,
what is to say that his USB ports on his machine didn't damage the USB Thumbdrive?

Good Luck with that. OCZ warranty support is terrible. They no longer manufacture flash drives, only SSD's.

I have had the same problem with the same model of Kingston USB stick on AMD chipset. It was so bad it would hang the system. I even had it replaced by Kingston. Did not help. Otherwise it works flawlessly on EVERY other hardware combination I have used it on.

Go figure.

It's not limited to AMD chipsets. I have a tablet PC and a laptop, both of which use Intel chipsets, and the USB problem is the same with both -- and the same with every USB stick I use.

Well I guess I am lucky in that respect. 4 GB Kinston and all SanDisk USB sticks perform without any problems. But externally powered Seagate FreeAgnet HDD don't.

I have been building PCs for the past 20 years. Though they may not have been the highest performing, in my experience via chipsets were the most reliable and trouble free in every respect. Perhaps Intel were losing out to them in the mid to lower end markets so they raised the bogie of patent infringement and cancelled their license.

Even today graphics on my Via C3 mini-itx board with on board S3 graphics performs better than any thing equivalent from Intel. Have been using one of them for about 5 years with ZERO problems.

Well... this seems to confort me in a way... In my desktop i got an Nvidia chipset (yes... with an ATI card... I couldn't afford an Nvidia one...) and USB ports work like a charm, I have no issues with USB devices including ALL my USB sticks (1 DataTraveler of 1 GB, 1 of 2 GB, 2 of 8 GB, one of then being an A-Data and the other a Kingston Datatraveler 100, and finally 2 of 16 GB, one KIngston, the other Sandisk...)

Weird enough, on my laptop the bigger capacity kingston sticks don't work properly (The 8 and 16 GB ones), just the lower ones... maybe something to do about capacity of the sticks and the way AMD hadles data (In my laptop, I got a M780 AMD chipset)

I hope next Mobos don't have issues with USB 3.0 or 2.0, because I?m seriously thinking on buying an AMD Mobo for my next desktop...

See ya!! :D

I guess this is something to think about. On my desktop with MSI K9A2GM motherboard I also have the 780 chipset which has been giving me problems with th8 gb Kingston and some exernal Seagate FreeAgent Go HDDs. All capacities of SanDisk yoto 32GB (highest ones I have) work. Everything wrtks just fine on my Zotac mini-itx with nVidia Ion chipset with dual core Atom. My via C7 mini-itx also performs flawlessly. My preferred chipset in the past has always been VIA, who are no longer supporting any Intel / AMD CPUs. You might say they are no longer in the chip-set business.

I am an AMD cpu fan (more like anti-Intel). Have only used these for the past 18 years. So for past couple of years I have switched to AMD cpu + nVidia chipset for all my desktop builds. Haven't faced any problems since.

BTW I have done a lot of searches for a solution even to the extent of bad mouthing the MSI motherboards and AMD chisets' USB implementation EVERY CHANCE i GOT. Alas, without evincing ANY kind of response whatsoever. Finally just added a via USB2 pci addon card !
