Can't get laptop and netbook linked via Homegroup

Have one laptop running Windows 7 Build 7100.
And a netbook also running Windows 7 Build 7100.

On the laptop I am running Kaspersky Internet Security 2009.
On the netbook I am running Avira anti-virus (although this problem existed when there was no anti-virus program installed).

I created a homegroup on the laptop and shared all folders.
I then joined this homegroup from the netbook (and shared all folders there too).
So under homegroup on either machine, I now see the other computer's name.

If I click on that name it brings up the libraries- documents, music, pictures, videos.
But if I click on any of them, nothing happens. If I right click, then properties it says 'the properties for this item are not available'.

Something seems to be preventing the machines from sharing these files properly.
I have tried looking in Kaspersky but can't see what might be 'untrusted' that I should mark 'trusted'.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?
Homegroup was the main reason I installed Windows 7 on the netbook!

01steven; Each computer may require the same name (and password) user account. Then look through your advanced sharing settings in the Network and sharing center and see if they are the same in both computers. Then try some different settings and see if that helps?

One thing to check with homegroups is the time - if the system time on both machines is not virtually identical the homegroup will fail.

apart from that if you let the troubleshooter run on both machines and report back any issues it finds.

you could also try and connect via the network route and see if that's possible

The other thing is temporarily disable your firewall on both machine to eliminate that as a cause
