60% of companies to skip windows 7

I've talked to numerous friends who are in the IT field and it seems that most of them work in an office environment where they have no plans whatsoever to move to Windows 7. They just really don't see the features and the functionality to warrant the "need" to move their from what they already have.

Hi there
Actually a new business model is emerging -- a lot of IT sites now either buy or help subsidize people with laptops -- the old fashioned Dinosaur model of 1000's of desktops in large offices is probably only applicable to things like off-shored / Indian call centers etc.

The laptops can have W7 -- and logon can always be made to corporate XP / vpn's etc which can be upgraded at will.

At my place external consultants are encouraged to use their own laptops as well -- keeps the business costs RIGHT DOWN.

Old fashioned workstations are really of the Dinosaur era.

Note that with modern laptops you can plug in really nice monitors which is what our place has done -- no more XP desktops (by mid 2010 - being done dept by dept - but even the desktops now logon to the corporate vpn / servers so maintenance is a doddle).

Cheers
jimbo

IMO this is a classical "half empty - half full" topic. Critics like to point out this ScriptLogic's study, telling that 60% of companies have no plans to migrate to Win7. Why not read it like 40% of companies interviewed tell they are going to migrate before the end of 2010.
Reuters said:
The survey found about 60 percent of those surveyed have no plans to deploy Windows 7, 34 percent will deploy it by the end of 2010 and only 5.4 percent will deploy by year's end.
(From Reuters' article)

It's a lot more than was from XP to Vista during the first year. In fact, I think it is quite a lot.

Every story have several angles.

I think one has to distinguish between people that use their PC as a toy (like most of us) and people that use the PC as a work tool. The latter will make a simple cost/effect calculation and on that basis it is always difficult to justify change. Besides the cost of the new software, they have a major bill on education including all the frustration from people that really do not want to learn new stuff.
Enthusiasts like us, however, will probably move pretty fast. For us it is a challenge to learn the new system and to play around with it. We are the "explorers".

Doesn't matter what logic or number set it follows...it remains speculation.

Take a stroll down history lane and look up the same articles regarding business deployment of both XP and Vista prior to their release...

They were sadly both way off the mark.

While I can't dispute the article, I can say that the atmosphere regarding "upgrading" to Window 7 in our enterprise is vastly different than it was when Vista came out.

With Vista, any mention of upgrading drew laughs and scorn. Whereas, we are actually doing a formal "Migration Plan" for Windows 7 right now! And, that will migrate over 1000 desktops and laptops.

And, that's not even considering the Virtual XP option as our machines don't have the virtualization in hardware required to do that.

So, I would expect that 40% to grow a lot within 12 months -- presuming that the "upgrade" experiences in the Enterprise world were positive.

I can't wait for the Antman's proposal on this one...

Let alone "z3r010"s...

I'd go just for the NZ lamb chops on the barbie, if I had sulfuric's phone number... :roflmao:
I would go there myself, if I only had the time. It's over 8 years now from my last visit to the beautiful Kiwiland.

The offer is valid. With those figures there is money to make to both parts.

Kari

Sulphuric's an Aussie, not a Kiwi (the flags look just, just totally different :P), but at those prices we could finance a group SF junket to beautiful NZ for most of the regulars!

We'd dilligently invest the 15 minutes necessary to "retrain" the users to deal with the implications of the New And Different Start Menu, and we'd spend the rest of the week on a coastal jaunt around the North Island: Auckland, Wellington, Napier, the Coromandel Peninsula, then up to the Bay of Islands :D

I do know he's an Aussie...

The intent was meant as:

No matter where the "assignment" was (not nec NZ),
I would only feel 'safe and confident' with Expert help a phone call away,
when it 'hit the fan' (and a few will...).

The coastal jaunt would have been something to look forward to,
after all users had the SF gadget installed...

A group SF junket would be --- ahhh, --- awesome... :D

Oh, OK. I was just making sure. As you know, .au and .nz have a complex relationship - we protect them militarily in return for having somebody to thrash in our "international" sporting competitions ;)

(The original plan was to work a sheep into that comment, but this is a family-oriented forum after all.)

I think many here in this thread are failing to grasp a very major point... Vista was release Jan. 30, 2007 and to date it has only garnered an 18% share of desktops worldwide! READ HERE By comparison XP (released in October of 2001) still has 65% of the market share... 8 YEARS LATER!

Win 7 had 3.2% market share last month A FULL MONTH BEFORE it's official release! For comparison; Vista had less than 1% share a month before it's official release in 2007!

In addition, this article about 60% dont plan to win7 was written 3-4 months ago when many were just getting on the Win7 bandwagon! A lot has changed since July in the press and marketplace concerning Win7. I do agree that the economy is going to slow the Enterprise from moving to 7, but it is inevitable!

To me the most wonderful thing about 7 is the fact that the code is smaller, lighter, and faster. Think of Win7 as "Steve Austin" after the accident and surgery! "Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was before. Better, stronger, faster."LOL!

To illustrate what I mean about smaller, lighter, faster: I have Win7 loaded on 2 machines that are not suppossed to run 7... (a 10 yr old P3 800MHz with only 512MB RAM, and a 5 yr old P4 2.8GHz with 768MB) neither would run vista, and both are running 7 faster than they ran XP. For more dinosaurs running Win7, see this thread: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/1657-windows-7-old-computers-13.html

So by only doing an OS upgrade many enterprise level businesses will overnight gain better, stronger, faster than they were before PC's! I think that many will switch... many more than switched to Vista! It will just take 6-12 months to see where the enterprise heads!
