Tarnish. It's one of those words that IT journalists like to use when a particular industry luminary gets "soiled" by bad news or a product release blunder.

Most recently, the term has been applied to Microsoft -- as in, "can Apple tarnish Windows 7" by seizing on the bad taste left over from Windows Vista? Some pundits are arguing that yes they can -- that Apple might seize up to 30 percent of the market as a result of all of the bad press surrounding Vista's failure and now the rocky Windows 7 upgrade path faced by XP users....

That Kennedy guy is clearly unstable. I heard he tried to sneak his way into PDC through an unlocked window on the 2nd floor. Security had to pry him free after he got stuck part way through. Tore his pants in the process, so they led him through the hall draped in trash bags - looked like a big, black diaper. Didn't see it for myself, but I heard it from a guy who knows a guy who has a friend who was in that section of the L.A. Convention Center on the day that it happened.

Very odd character, that one! They say he smells like cheese...and has lots of weird piercings. One report claims he has a tattoo of the Linux penguin committing some obscene act on...Bambi!

The guy never had a nice thing to say about Microsoft or Windows. Some of his more outrageous claims:

1. Windows 7 is architecturally almost identical to Windows Vista.
2. Performance of Windows 7 is no better than Vista and inferior to XP.
3. Resource consumption (RAM, CPU), while better than Vista, is still way higher than XP when running identical tasks.
4. Pigs can fly.

Worse, still, only 3 out of 4 proved to be correct. Which, of course, means he's wrong about everything nearly 25% of the time. What a loser!

By all accounts (including my own), Windows 7 is what Vista should have been: a solid, stable successor to Windows XP that improves on its predecessor and matches up well with the current state of the PC hardware ecosystem
