Backup fails with error 0x8007007B

OK, I started the backup at 8:00 am this morning and by 2:00 pm it had barely gotten half way
through. I stopped it and unclicked Create Disk Image and tried it again. It was taking less time,
but I noticed that it was backing up my E: USB drive. We use that for media.

So, I turned the E: drive off, turned Create Disk Image back on and retried the backup.
It finished, had a yellow line and stated:
Check your backup results
The backup completed but some files were skipped.
error 0x8100002F
And it listed this:
Windows Backup skipped E:\ because it cannot be found on drive E:\.

So, the CHKDSK must have fixed the file name problem which caused the 0x8007007B error.
Before I ran CHKDSK, I had noticed a folder that I could not delete because the name had a
TAB in it instead of spaces. It got an error when I attempted to delete it both in an explorer
window and with a CMD prompt.

I had noticed that Windows 7 uses libraries and somehow it must have pulled the E: drive in as being part of some library.
No where in setting up the backup did it mention the E: drive.

I just typed in Libraries in the search part of the start menu and it found it.
Administrator did not list the E: drive on Documents, Music, Pictures or Video just administrator and public.

I logged into each of the other accounts and E: was listed on my profile and I removed the reference.
The other accounts did not list the E: drive as part of any of the libraries.
So, should that be OK now that I have removed the library references to E:?
I am setting it up to run everyday at 12 noon, and each day (if it works like Vista did) it will only take a few
minutes as there are only a few changes made since the last backup.

I have a DVD that I had created a while ago named Repair Disk Windows 7 64 bit.
Is that DVD still good and if/when I do need it do I just put that in, boot up and it will pick up where it needs to?

So, now I have a data file backup with today's date and it is 31.12 GB.
Then I have a System image that is 173.18 GB. Does this sound correct?

I just opened Backup and Restore and clicked on Back Up Now and it took about 5 mins to complete!
So, computersplus, you did it! It was definitely a file name error that CHKDSK fixed!
(Computer > right click on C: drive > Properties > Tools tab > Error Checking - click on Check Now)

Just a couple of questions (1 repeated from above):
1) I have a DVD that I had created a while ago named Repair Disk Windows 7 64 bit.
Is that DVD still good and if/when I do need it do I just put that in, boot up and it will pick up where it needs to?
2) Will it be able to find my F: drive in the above scenario and the backed up disk image and folders and files?

well I would not depend on anything made during a state where things were not working properly once you are satisfied that everything is working good then start form scratch and make a new image of the drive in case you need it i hope this answers your questions

I deleted the old backup image and backups and re-created them.
Everything works great and a lot faster this time. It even asked if I wanted to create another repair disk, which I did.
The next day when the scheduled backup occurred, it was fast and went well too.

I think I have uncovered the reason why this error happened in the first place.
I had a homemade video that was too big for youtube and so it had to be split into 2 parts.
I booted up into Ubuntu to do this as I have found it easier.
I cut and pasted the 1+ GB file from the C: drive to a Ubuntu directory, split it into 2 parts
and cut and pasted in back onto the C: (windows) drive. Then I booted back into Windows.
I believe this caused Windows to go haywire because it did not control the file manipulation.
Therefore the indexes, etc. became "messed up" until I ran the "CHKDSK" to fix it.

I did this twice and the 2nd time Windows became very unstable. The first time all I noticed was the
error with the backup process. After the 2nd time, several programs would stop responding; even task manager.
Both times I had to suffer through a 4-5 hour CHKDSK process...
So, now I will cut and paste the file to an external USB drive before I boot into Ubuntu.
I believe this will eliminate the error/problem from happening in the future.

Found this thread really helpful. I've had the same problem since migrating to 7 - 32 bits from Vista back in November last year. I'm running an Acer 9920G. Trouble is none of the solutions given here actually solved the problem. Looking into the event viewer the event ID for my problem was 4104. Couldn't find much help anywhere for this coupled with 0x8007007B but it seemed that this event ID was in some way linked to the OEM partitions on Acer (and other?) machines.

As I have a fully legit version of Seven, and have created a recovery disk I decided that I could recover the disk space by deleting the 2 Acer OEM partitions which I did (thanks to this link - How to delete OEM Partition | Jared Heinrichs Windows Backup then ran without any problem. I had a problem subsequently with an "int15" service not being able to run. This stems from Registry key HKLM\system\controlset001\services\int15 which seems to be linked to Acer's eRecovery propriety software and I believe is trying to access the oem partition. Removing this key (having first copied it to the desktop) resolved this problem. With a 7 recovery disk and the original 7 disks the Acer Vista soution is now redundant.

I therefore offer these thoughts for anyone in a similar situation. I do stress that I've gone down this route with little formal technical training but (like Cavsfan) a long history of using Windows (and DOS before it). I've seen lots of folks have problems with Seven's backup. Like Cavsfan I see no reason why I should use third party software when Windows is supposed to do the job. Whilst the 'FUBAR' comments I've seen elswhere may not be absolutely correct, Microsoft are certainly not obeying their own precepts on formulating error messages -Error Messages Its taken me a fortnight to sort this out (I work slowly and have the time) but am happy to now be able use my computer for what it's designed for and not to solve Microsofts/Acer's problems.
