A repair install does not remove or delete any of your files.
It just repairs the registry.

Do a Repair installation if:
  • A System Restore did not help fix your Windows 7.
  • There is no other easier option left that can fix your Windows 7.
  • You DO NOT want to do a Clean reinstall of Windows 7.
  • You DO want to preserve your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers.

Try these downloads - C++ 2005 Redistributable Package....

- Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
- Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x64)
- Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x64)
- Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)

Try the 64-bit versions first, then install the 32-bit (x86) after.

You might also want to double check your Windows Update for any missing C++ files.

Which updates failed? All? Some?

And as I stated - have you checked Windows Update?

Obviously...Windows Update is the one failing on the update, and if I download the .msu installer that fails too. I tried doing the upgrade option, then checking for updates etc and it said something about the installer failed and that I had to reboot and enter setup.

EDIT: Just tried to install the x86 version and I get the exact same error.

NOTE: I have not got the SP1 update, since Windows Update has not installed or notified me about it yet.

Well something's odd that you don't have C++ 2005 installed on your system. It's also odd that you didn't get SP1 offered either, and that Windows Update is failing to install C++2005 updates, so...... I have to ask..... where did you get your copy of Windows from?

At any rate all I can say right now is that if a Repair Install didn't work for you, you may have to do a clean install.... provided your Windows 7 is genuine.

Sorry.

BTW here's my C++ installs.....

That's Odd - my C++ update fails with unknown component error but my WU says it successfully installed.

But yet still shows in my WU as an important update

I have permissions/ownership of the key but still this update keeps saying it fails.
