Just released the best FREE backup app. ever.

This deserves a new thread - with so many now installing a new o/s and/or dual booting, there is an even greater need for reliable backup solution.

Paragon Backup & Recovery 10 Free Edition :

32 Bbit and 64 bit program available:

features:

Free Backup - Backup & Recovery

Afaik, this is the only always free backup image app. which includes Full and Differential imaging, as well as a range of scheduling options.

Run off the bootable disc from within the program straight away - it prompts you to do so.

The boot disc contains the features of the program in bootable form.

Other free programs can be forced to go faster ( by increasing cpu usage) - none of them include all these features. I have always found the Paragon image products completely reliable.

Does Paragon Backup & Recover 10 Free run any processes in the background? Acronis runs 4 or 5 (a couple schedulers, an image mounter, something else). They use very little resources but they're there and I prefer to keep things as lean as possible.
Thanks.

New project(2013)...Another low power server. Zotac H67ITX, i3-2100T, Windows Server 2012 Essentials on Samsung SSD.
Previous project...Low power (38-40 watts using Kill-a-Watt) Windows Home Server. Zotac ION (Atom 330, GeForce9400), 4GB RAM, 2x2TB WD Green, IN WIM miniITX Case. Fits on a shelf in laundry closet, practically silent.
I'll have a look - I don't have anything Paragon showing up in services.

I believe all the new 10 series use windows Task scheduler - I am using DB10 server - but imagine the others are the same ( even the free one).

You don't need to mount with Paragon - they provide 2 other methods of copying individual files and folders back out of an image.

Why not just d/l and install it and see. It is the free version of course, so don't expect all the bells and whistles - but there's an incredible amount considering it's free.

The free version is for drive/partition imaging. Not for file backups.

Also, it's brand new - the first released build - so have fun.

You're welcome Tews.

Not sure this is any better than the DB9 Pro you already have - but it's an always free product to everyone.

If you like playing with software - you might have a look at it anyway.

They Hard Disk Manager 10 will be the killer product. They are spending a long time putting it together - it won't be out for quite a while yet. HDM10 won't be free of course.

Hi there

the FREE version is almost WORSE than useless (but better than nothing if you aren't at least backing up your OS) -- any of the SENSIBLE features you really need such as "Incremental Backups", Network disk backup / restore, remote disk backup / restore / job scheduling, single/ multiple FILE RECOVERY, Spanned (or Multiple Volume) backups etc etc are only available in the PAID FOR version.

In Paid for software these products are all much the same -- choose what you prefer. I've been using Acronis successfully for a few years -- but there are other choices too.

Now the FREE version is better than nothing for those people who DON'T at least backup their OS so ANY backup is better than NONE but IMO for a few USD / GBP / EUR / Rubles etc etc. it's worth it to get a decent PROFESSIONAL backup solution.

Cheers

The fact that this Paragon tool can image EXT3/EXT4 is what will get me to try it out. I do use Linux boxes, and dual boot a couple of boxes....so being able to do both Windows and Linux would be nice.

Since you own the full version of ATI 2011 Home it should have more features/functionality than any of the free software and Acronis is proven reliable software.

If the 3 programs that you use now backup/restore your computer to your satisfaction then that is all you should need. I only use more than one in case one of the back ups fail. Since I last posted I have discontinued my third solution saving disk space as I back up 2 different windows installations, Vista/Windows 7 separately.

As for Macrium I had tried it about a year ago and the boot/rescue CD could not find my external drives where my back up was stored. Macrium has since come out with newer versions with added features (see FREE Great Programs for Windows 7 - Macrium Reflect) so I have not tried the new version.

I use the free download of Acronis True Image WD Edition provided as an owner of a Western Digital Drive which is somewhat feature limited only allowing some features such as Drive imaging/cloning etc. but has proven reliable for me as my first option.

Second option is Paragon which does basically the same as above but with more drive features (not necessarily related to backup/restore).

Third is the windows 7 own image backup, however since I am duel booting Windows 7 wants to image both windows 7 and Vista together.

All 3 of these programs have been used by me to backup/restore with success however it should be noted that I prefer just a basic drive image backup, no file backup (just copy & paste a particular file to my chosen save location when needed).
