Windows Essentials 2012 won't install on fresh Windows 7 install.

I swapped out the HDD on my wife's laptop with a new SSD, and did a fresh install of Windows 7.

My wife liked the live mail, and the photo viewer, and had the 2009 version on the old system, I think.

Anyway......you can only install the new Windows Essentials 2012, or it's individual components....or so I thought.

I tried doing that, and first it hung on the "install", until I got fed up and cancelled. A couple more attempts, and it said it couldn't install mail, movie maker and photo viewer. I tried the offline installer, tried finding an older version....with no luck.

It would keep installing OneDrive though, if I tried to install the entire suite.

One thing I found out is, that if there are any components/program files from previous versions, it won't install, or so I read. If I go to C:\Program files, and/or C:\Program files(x86), there are folders for Live essentials components. Obviously it came with the fresh Windows 7. I'm pretty sure that is the reason, but if I simply try to right click and delete those folders, it tells me I need permission from TrustedInstaller to make changes to the folders.

It's ridiculous.

Any help/feedback GREATLY appreciated.

Hi Acill,
If you still have the old HDD, put it back in, make an image and transfer that to the SSD.
(most around here use Macrium/Aomei)

Do you mean just an image of the windows live essentials, that she was using? I'm not doing an image of the entire drive, as that machine was having issues that I'd yet to figure out, and since an SSD is always a good move on a laptop, we decided to start fresh, and get rid of all the ASUS bloatware in the process. It was very slow, freezing, occasional BSOD......even came here, and got help, and never did resolve it. This "fresh start" appears to have solved it....so far.

That said, all I really need to do is get rid of the program files from the windows essential, that is already part of my windows 7 that I just installed, and it sounds like it will install Windows Essentials 2012.

The problem is trying to remove the existing windows live mail and photo viewer folders, from my C drive. It won't let me.

I followed these instructions, to the letter

and then upon trying to delete the files, it said I needed administrator privileges. WTF.

Even though I have changed permissions to allow full access I still get an error that I need permission from myself. Which is ridiculous because I am myself.

There HAS to be a way to delete the old program files. This is ridiculous!

BSOD and freeze, according to your last posts about the camera, the last speccy report showed the 2010 driver not the DriverMax 2011 you found, its possible that asus have a newer one check there first.

I'm not going to reinstall the old HDD....on top of the occasional BSOD, it was just very slow, and with that, and the freezing, it wasn't worth the aggravation anymore. We disabled the driver for the camera, and it didn't change anything. It performs so much better with the SSD anyway.

As far as the Windows Essentials issue.....I don't have an installer/uninstaller....anywhere. It seems hopeless, but that's Microsoft for you, I guess.

Have you had a look in Control Panel, then Programs & Features to see if Windows Essentials 2012 is showing there, if it is you should be able to Right Click on it & select Uninstall/change & select that & follow through.

That last time I installed Windows Essentials 2012, which was some years ago, it took ages to install, so be sure to give it plenty of time to download & install.

Thank you, but it didn't do anything.

When trying to run it, it told me their was a problem with one of my windows live programs, and to try removing it first.

There is no effing program to remove.

It asked me if I wanted it to run anyway. I let it.

Nothing changed.

More Microsoft BS.

Take a screen shot of your uninstall a program list
On the top right next to the question mark switch the page view to List and everything should show up on one screen shot.

No need to do that, there is nothing at all to do with Windows Live on that list. No Live Mail, no photo viewer....nothing at all. I have Windows Live Essentials on my desktop, and it's all on that list, her list has NO Windows Live anything on it.

At one time it may have also included MSE Microsoft security essentials

The download only shows 5 entries now but I have not tried to download it I dumped wle long ago
Have you tried the off line installer ?

No, Skype is not installed.

I believe I tried the offline installer, but I can't remember for sure......feels like I've tried everything. I think it's because I can't get rid of those program files off my C drive.

No, I haven't. It's a brand new SSD, and a fresh install of 7, and theses stubborn program files came with the OS, obviously. I'm always leery of those programs, more so with my wife's laptop. If anything goes wrong, she'll say, "well, you were screwing around with that cleaner program.......you get the idea. I've used that before myself, but it's been a long time. Will it show unused program files like that? I tried to remove them, and needed permission, and I changed the permission from TrustedInstaller to me, and it still wanted administrator permission, which was ridiculous. Can't help wonder if it would simply let me delete them in safe mode.

It's a lot easier to clean install these days with the unofficial sp2
There are essentially 3 updates needed for a clean install of windows that will get you updated through April of 2016

KB3020369 & KB3125574 & KB3172605 all can be downloaded from the M$ catalog using internet explorer

When manually installing updates you need to switch your update settings to Never check for updates and restart the machine first.

After restart you will need to ensure the built in windows update service is stopped and set to manual first too or it will conflict with the stand alone installer.

Afterwards reset the windows updates service to what it was before and update settings to your preference and check for updates
Should be only 50 or so updates left to install.

I also have all 3 updates on my OneDrive if you can't or don't want to deal with the catalog

Thanks for this info. I did have an issue with Windows updates after the install.

On a side note, I got the ISO from a friend that used to do some type of IT work, and I trust him( I think). He said it was Windows 7 SP1, so why would it have the windows live essentials program files on it?? Seems strange to me. Wonder if he gave me a "corrupt" ISO?

That said, I had to clean out the update cache, as it tried to configure 270 updates, and couldn't do it, and reverted everything. I followed this video:

I have it back to "normal", I guess you could say......and it's back to where it's ready to download and install 282 updates.....something like that.
