I was put in this direction by "idontnkowmyname" and found out quite a lot about it on the web.( Notebook Review forum)

It seems that my sound problem ( dating from may this year ) could have to do with this Jack, that for some reason, starts to misjudge what is happening.

It cannot switch back from audio on internal laptop speakers to headphones and back. So it only gives sound when headphones are used, which is my case.

There are a lot of other cases, especially Dell laptops, but all the registry threads are slightly different, so I don't know what to do in my case.

I am still convinced that my sound problem is software, there is something wrong in my settings, but I don't know what.

I have downloaded the latest Realtech driver, it shows now in my Programs and features, but does nothing.

The drivers in my Device manager ( For sound ) are still the same old once from 2009, I uninstall them, reboot and the computer finds them back somewhere and re-installs them. It's ( for me :shock: mindblowing )

So I have established that,

1) the device is not plugged in,

2) the device is working properly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, I am now scrutinously searching the web for way's of manually editing JRQ's and especially Dell laptops series Inspiron.

There are a lot of sound problems to do with sharing IRQ's .

Soundcards want there one preferably IRQ 5.

I keep you informed of my progress. Problem 1 (and the very first issue in may this year, I can not enter my BIOS, because of lost password.

This info I am reading is so complicated and there is so much.

If I had a desktop I could try changing slots, but it's a laptop .....

well we can try to rule out if its hardware or software by running a live cd like ubuntu. if your laptop speakers work using the live cd then it going to be software if sound not working for laptop speakers then probably hardware.

Your conflict could be caused by the microsoft generic drivers, If you can could you please revert back to your original driver(s) for your High Def Audio device? Device Manager - Roll Back Driver

My device page is on the right and I would believe you should have more that two connections showing on yours.




They should be the IDT 92HD79B1 Driver for your machine If you can not revert, use the Dell link to reinstall. Make sure you have the IDT driver downloaded and on your Desktop.

• You will have to click on Properties in the Controller Information section.

• Then Change Settings.

• Then the Driver tab; Update driver.

You will see:



Click on that and follow the prompts to locate the IDT driver that you should already have on your desktop, click on OK, or Open and follow the progress until finished then test.

If you can, please re-post a screenshot of the Speakers Properties window like you did in post #10.

Thanks, Oscer and Steve , for your input and thoughts.

First of all, I cannot rollback my Sound drivers,( tried that one) is greyed out because they are my original drivers.

I have tried everything to upgrade them, but Windows(M$ ) keeps putting the same once back.

Now only Yesterday, I found a link tutorial of Rink about overruling this by changing settings and have put a shortcut on my desktop " Device installation settings ".

Been to Dell for updates in devices, they suggest a slightly newer audio HD device now. Have not done that jet.

Myself I have downloaded new Realtek stuff and it is on the list now of Programs and features in Device Manager, but my laptop ignores it .

Steve, I am sure there are only 2 sound outlets, booth on the left side of my PC, one is for headphones -which I am using all the time now - and one is for a speaker ( I think ). The one I use works when I plug in my speakers, the other one does not.

I have not done the Ubuntu thing jet, I am very new in all this and need to take my time to study new things.

Been getting a member of Ubuntu today, as I think it is safe and a very intelligent help.

Well, I thought, I start completely at the start again, but cannot use the Diagnostic Troubleshooting Wizard
so I will have to find out first now, what is going on there,

would you be able to get the BIOS version, like I'm not a pro but I get the feeling that you have tried so much and nothing seems to work and obviously some where something is wrong. And maybe a BIOS update would fix it I don't know but I think it is worth a try.

And maybe also run this: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html so we can pinpoint the location of the problem.

I'm sorry if I'm posting a useless attempt for a fix.

Sorry for late reply.

This problem with all my help and support ( also troubleshooters ) not working needs to be fixed first, otherwise I cannot go further with this sound problem. Therefore I am ( as you suggested ) doing the System file checker now.

Also, you ARE right about the BIOS.

Long ago, I arrived here on this forum, because I had read that for my sound problem I need to change settings in the BIOS.

There is a good Video about that on Y Tube, I have it somewhere in my bookmarks.

The problem was, and still is, that I could not open the BIOS because of a password. I even called Dell and gave my Tag nr and Service express nr. They gave me a password that did not work

So, dead end.

I'll come back to you, with more news, thanks again for your help,

I downloaded the manual for your model lappy and I think you have 1 speaker/headphone jack and 1 microphone jack. Please take a moment and see if this is true. Then message me with what you find.

Well, apparently, the mysterious visitor has left the building so we are back amongst ourselves again.

Anyway I have a good manual of my DELL Inspiron laptop. ad I have indeed 1 speaker headphone jack and 1 microphone jack as shown in post #10.

I will try to do the Ubuntu test next as Oscer proposed ( if I understand it )
