After not using my laptops headphone jack for a while I decided to try them again with earbuds as usual but this time no audio will play out of them. If I had the speakers unmuted when I have the earbuds unplugged audio will play through them. When the earbuds are plugged in, the speakers will be silent and no audio plays through the earbuds. I don't know if this proves the jack is not broken and recognizes when its being used...my other computer plays the same earbuds with no problem.

Before trying to reinstall the audio drivers, in playback devices it would list headphones and that they were disconnected even if I plugged them in. Now that i've uninstalled the realtek hd audio driver and the audio display driver(?) the headphones don't show up anymore. I uninstalled and reinstalled them through device manager. For some reason the audio display driver is now just called high definition audio device. When looking at it on sound in playback it shows digital audio (HDMI) and as disconnected and speakers which are enabled.

The speakers are working fine as before despite this wording change? I've already restarted multiple times after each reinstall and did a full shutdown too, ran sfc scan theres nothing weird detected. I don't know what's gone wrong really. I have a separate jack for the mic and the mic is automatically detected fine.

Um well I decided to reinstall my Realtek hd audio driver again but it too is now replaced by a generic audio display driver? It now shows 2 speakers in sound playback....is there a way to get back the old drivers with their old name? I'm really not sure on the first one but I think it was just called audio display driver before uninstalling it. There is no way to roll them back. It really did uninstall Realtek this time since I can't find the manager for it.

UPDATE: I downloaded realtek again from dell for my model and this time whenever I plug in my headphones it says that I've connected them. I have stereo enabled but still no sound from the earbuds.

Right click the volume icon (speaker) Chose Playback devices. Select your device and hit set default. Also pay attention to the Configure option...

There's also hidden devices, but we'll worry about that if need be...
