I did manage to get it to work, by just going to Control Panel>sound>Record tab (right Click on white space - Show Disabled Devices) and enable the stereo mix.

It should be noted that this is not a fix for everyone. Only if your soundcard supports it (and not many do)

No Go

I tried the suggestions here, but no go. I have a Realtek soundcard, which should have the latest drivers (just bought the computer new this month). I can't use the analog trick because my inputs/outputs are already used up (I have a miniature recording studio).

Has anyone found another fix? I can't go back to Windows XP, or I would...

What U Hear recording DOES NOT work under Win7

After hours of research online and tech support calls, I've confirmed that Creative Labs' X-Fi Audio and many X-Fi Audigy cards WILL NOT support What U Hear recording under Win7, even if the card worked fine under Win XP.

So don't waste your time. It's not you. It's Creative. They have failed to update the drivers for those cards properly for Windows 7. A big fat raspberry to Creative. Now I've gotta spring another $90 for a new card. Below is the support e-mail from Creative confirming this.

"We apologize for any inconvenience." Yah.

Thanks to those on this forum who have shared what they know. It didn't help me, but I appreciate the effort. That's why I came back to post what I found.

Subject: Re: CLI - Technical Support Request - (PCI Express X-Fi Xtreme
Audio) (KMM20501171I15977L0KM)

Dear XXXX,

Thank you for reaching us at Creative Technical Support; we appreciate
the opportunity to assist you.

With regards to your inquiry, the What U Hear recording option is supported in Windows Vista and Windows 7 for Sound Blaster X-Fi series (Excluding Xtreme Audio series) and Sound Blaster Audigy series (excluding Sound Blaster Audigy LE, SE, and Audigy Value).

So PCI Express X-Fi Xtreme Audio does not have the What U Hear feature in Windows 7.

I do apologize for any inconvenience caused.

If you still require assistance, please reply to this email with any
previous correspondence to ensure the quickest and most accurate
service.

Best Regards ,

Guys, I had the same problem. Creative 7 drivers don't support this feature as they did in XP for me. I switched out the card and installed Asus Xonar DS and installed 7 drivers and it worked! I'm using NERO WaveEditor to record streaming audio. Good luck!

I had a similar problem on my laptop. I opened audacity and tried several different settings to get it to record what I was hearing, and it wouldn't work. Turns out I had drivers for my sound card through microsoft. I downloaded the realtek drivers from acer and it solved the problem! (after enabling the "stereo mix" recording device)

On my desktop I have a sound blaster XFi, and it works fine with audacity.

Bad news: I bought a SoundBlaster X-Fi Titanium adapter because Creative told me it would support recording What U Hear under Win7 x64. The card won't even install. Creative has "new Win7" drivers on its site and a special "Product Identification" tool to enable Win7 to recognize the Titanium card. The tool won't install -- it tells me I'm not running Win7. This is really nuts. Creative has turned into Irresponsible. I've had it.

I couldn't agree more. The once leaders in sondcards have rested on their past successes, shame on you Creative! I'm still waiting for their customers service team to provide answers to my questions. I sent the email almost 2 weeks ago! I solved the problem myself, BUY AN ASUS SOUND CARD!
