Beta Norton 360 for W7

Norton has a beta n360 for Windows 7 beta. It's nice.

Please use appropriate titles for your posts - I have adjusted it accordingly.

Also, some more information would be nice - is this an open or closed Beta (and if you're referring to lightning, I'll have you know you're violating their terms of testing)....

Is it available for download?

Yes Johngalt, it is available for download from the Symentec website. I downloaded it last night and am running it on windows 7 64bit without any porblems. This is Norton 360 v3 Beta. It is initially activated for 15 days but just hit the activation button and you are good for 29 days. After that you can reactivate this version for a total of 120 days. OK, thanks for that. I was just making sure - they are pretty strict about us even talking about beta testing codenamed projects, but if it is public, then it's all good.

LOL, same here. With all the trouble Norton had when Vista came out, I wouldn't even want to think of what may lie in store with this version.

Honestly, I am running Avast on this machine - but I am installing W7 on the old P4 and it is going to get the n360 installed - if anything that will be a *good* comparison....

lmfao - if you think a P4 machine with all IDE drives and an x1650Pro video card is going to be used for *anything* worthwhile considering the rig I have in my system specs, then you're mistaken - that thing has not been powered on since April....

What better machine to Beta test apps on than something that sits around collecting dust?

But if Norton's usual performance holds true for this beta, it should cause your machine a meltdown =P. Nah all jokes aside, I used Norton for a long, long time before I switched to NOD32, and I always enjoyed using it, despite the ludicrous performance drops... that is until my PC was killed by virus that Norton didn't catch. Been afraid of it ever since.

I have used Symantec's Corporate AV clients since version 6, and until SEP 11 didn't work in W7 I had used nothing but. Part of that is because it is the same client we use at school, but even before that I was required to use it for VPN access for my job. And that has been going on 5+ years now....

I stayed away from non-enterprise clients of any kind when I can because I never find them fast enough nor secure enough. When I installed Avast! on W7 it was the first time I had installed a non enterprise client in almost that same 5 year period.

I have never used any of the 360 series (othe than beta testing them when they ask, under both a Virtual machine and a test machine) nor *any* of the NIS series.

SAV CE and SEP have been the only thing I trust from them for a very very long time.

I installed 360 beta. Came off within a day, my internet was all screwed up, my utorrent problem was down to it. My tversity would not work and my counterstrike crashed like wanno. Could not believe it.
Uninstalled it and voila!! everything came back straight away. I cant believe people pay for this stuff. and yes i know its a beta, but i tried 360 when it first came out and it sucked. More fool me for trying again lol

I have been using norton for 10 years now. I upgraded and had problems reinstalling internet security in 2008 even with online tech support so i switched to norton 360. Had it on 6 home computers. The all sucked,,, so when 360 v2 came out, i tried the beta as well as 2009 beta. I have 360 v2 runing on 3 computers, it's ok, and Internet security 2009 running on 3 laptops that i like. Now i am testing 360 v3 on windows 7 and so far so good. Yeah i am a sucker for symantec.

I absolutely despised Norton previously, this dates back to many years and security suite of sorts (cant remember exactly which one) on a family pc. and always advised strongly against it, to everyone i spoke to about norton. the issues for me were the resource usage, and how difficult it was to get rid off in the early days. i was just given an old toshiba satellite pro to repair for a family friend, and it had norton 2002/3? loaded, and i actually couldnt remove it no matter what i did (symantec tool, safe mode, uninstaller etc) and eventually decided to do a fresh install to avoid bouncing the laptop off the walls.

however ! i was recommended Norton Internet Security 2009 by a friend, with a previous dislike for Norton. i thought it must be worth a try for said friend to be recommending it. to cut a long story short, i love it. they have really sorted out the resource use, it has a high detection rate, and it was also dead easy to remove (something i tried for the hell of it) once you have the settings that is pretty much it, very little intrusion. it also has a couple of neat features - Norton insight, which catalogues all the safe files on your system, so it doesnt need to continuously scan the same files over and over. it also has an idle scan feture, which means that you dont have to run a scan, it does it itself, during its idle time.

i am also running the 360 beta on my laptop, and find it equally as good. anyone that previously hated Norton (of which i was one) i suggest you give it a go, you will be pleasantly surprised

Yeah, they basically figured out how to use their decent detection and low resource usage of the corporate clients and made it into an end user client.

Its a pity they never thought of it before. I used to use it but as everyone knows it slows your pc down so much. I would have used it if the problem was sorted out earlier. I use avg internet security and its excellent.

tried this out for about a week. From previous years experience with norton, this was a fairly decent app this time. Although it seems extremely paranoid at times, I didnt have it screwing up much of anything. Some shutdown problems happened, but the blame would have to lie with the norton gadget not wanting to shutdown properly alot of the times.

I hate to say, but i found this version to be more "streamlined" than previous versions, but like i said, i really only got to test this minimally for about a week.
