I updated to the latest version of MBAM this morning. I forgot to uncheck make a shortcut for the desktop. When I tried to delete that shortcut, I keep getting, first, a message saying I need to provide administrator permission to delete this file. I am an administrator but, when I click on continue, I get another popup saying I need permission from Administrators to make changes to this file. Seriously? For a lousy shortcut? Short of restoring to the image I made yesterday and reinstalling the update again, what the big fat holy hairy heck can I do to get rid of this stupid shortcut?

Hi, LF:

The most common explanation for the behavior you describe is that you have the Self Protection (SP) module enabled.
As explained here, SP protects MBAM system files and will prevent the user from deleting/renaming/moving the desktop shortcut.

So, from the dashboard > settings > Advanced Settings > Remove the checkmark from the option to "Enable Self-Protection Module".
A reboot shouldn't be needed, but it wouldn't hurt.
You ought to be able to remove the shortcut.

Thanks, MoxieMomma! Reboots were necessary (I tried deleting after just unchecking the protection module but got the same stupid messages): once to get disabling the protection module to take effect and another one to make sure reenabling the protection module took effect. All that just to get rid of a stupid shortcut... :shock:

I'm amazed the protection module's protection extends to shortcuts, too. Also, it would have been nice if MBAM would mention that reboots are necessary to get changes to settings to take effect.

Each system is different.
It may have been some sort of interaction with other security applications or system configurations.
But, yes, the SP module is designed to protect MBAM system files, including the shortcut.
As for the reboot, if some file was "in use", then, as you know with Windows updates, a reboot will be needed.
Without diagnostic logs, it would be impossible to say for sure.

As for your suggestions, I'm not sure if you refer to a dialog window from the GUI when changing certain settings, or to an explanation in the FAQ or User Guide?
It's a good idea.
Either way, the best place to offer such suggestions for the product team would be in the MBAM "Comments and Suggestions" sub-forum

A bit of clarification regarding the roll-out of 2.1.6.1022

WHO:
Currently, it is being pushed out via auto-update and only to users already running 2.1.4.1018 (because it is a bug-fix release for a couple of issues with that version).

The formal, throttled roll-out to all users will continue from that point, starting in a few days (perhaps starting early next week).

In order to be sure you receive the program update when it is available via auto-updater, please be sure you have the relevant setting enabled (see screen shot).

WHERE:
Note: 2.1.6.1022 is not yet available from the main product download page at the Malwarebytes web site.

Anyone who wishes to upgrade now, without waiting, may do so by downloading the installer directly from the special link provided in 1PW's post, >>here<<.
(Note: if you use Firefox with NoScript, you'll need to temporarily enable both "box.com" and "boxcdn.net")

HOW:
You should be able to upgrade on top of your existing version -- doing so may or may not require a system reboot, depending on your OS version and whether you have enabled the setting for "context menu entry" scanning.

This information is the current available from Malwarebytes staff, pending new information/updates.

Yes, it is being throttled, but it is currently available via auto-update only to users already running 2.1.4, as this build (2.1.6) fixes some bugs that some users experienced with 2.1.4.
You may or may not have experienced the bugs on your system, as they did not affect all users.
(If you are running 1.75 (for some reason) or 2.0, you will not YET be offered 2.1.6, probably until some time next week.)

You can wait a few days until it offered to you from the program's auto-updater, perhaps early next week.
If so, please be sure your update settings are configured to check for PROGRAM updates, not just database updates.

Or you can update now by downloading the 2.1.6 installer from a special link >>HERE<< (it is not YET available on the MBAM product main page).
You can install on top of a previous version (may need to reboot), or you can perform a clean upgrade, as explained here.

  • I do suggest that you read that post, as it explains not only the bug fixes, but also one of the settings changes that results from that bug fix.
