Hello. I had cleaned BetterSurf from my Win7x64 system some months ago, but having just run SpyBot S&D, I get the following results:

BetterSurf: [SBI $00D4CCBF] Class ID (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{6E3C6B04-08FE-43BC-8E50-F90285024DEA}

BetterSurf: [SBI $0CB2BE42] Interface (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{462862BE-9A5C-49A5-9CBD-A649EAC63645}

BetterSurf: [SBI $0CB2BE42] Interface (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{462862BE-9A5C-49A5-9CBD-A649EAC63645}

BetterSurf: [SBI $7C0F7967] Type library (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{0113A098-06EA-4776-A011-D75590778F1E}

BetterSurf: [SBI $7C0F7967] Type library (Registry key, nothing done)
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{0113A098-06EA-4776-A011-D75590778F1E}

--- Spybot - Search & Destroy version: 1.6.2 (build: 20090126) ---

Spybot says these are "in use" and won't "fix" the problem. After giving it permission to run on reboot, the problem remains. I've read that MalwareBytes can deal with this, but would rather not install yet another program if not necessary. I find no trace of BetterSurf elsewhere on my system. Can I simply delete those registry entries?

Thanks for any advice, -Ron

BetterSurf is adware ... please do this first (Spybot will try to interfere with what we want to do here):
1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts (if you have TeaTimer)
5) Restart your computer.

Next, download AdwCleaner by Xplode and save to your Desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.

  • Vista/Windows 7/8 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • AdwCleaner will begin...be patient as the scan may take some time to complete.
  • After the scan has finished, click on the Report button...a logfile (AdwCleaner[R#].txt) will open in Notepad for review (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
  • The contents of the log file may be confusing. Unless you see a program name that you know should not be removed, don't worry about it. If you see an entry you want to keep, let me know about it.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
  • A copy of all logfiles are saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder which was created when running the tool.
Using AdwCleaner v3: Scan & Clean:
Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool again.
Click on the Scan button.
AdwCleaner will begin to scan your computer like it did before.
After the scan has finished...

This time click on the Clean button.
Press OK when asked to close all programs and follow the onscreen prompts.
Press OK again to allow AdwCleaner to restart the computer and complete the removal process.
After rebooting, a logfile report (AdwCleaner[S#].txt) will open automatically (where the largest value of # represents the most recent report).
Copy and paste the contents of that logfile in your next reply.
A copy of that logfile will also be saved in the C:\AdwCleaner folder

Please post both logfiles.

Thank you. I've run the AdwCleaner scan but not clean, because I'm doubtful about removing the AVG Safeguard Toolbar. An AVG update just the other day installed that, and so far it looks useful. Is there reason to suspect it? (If I choose to remove it, I would do so from the control panel programs & settings menu, where it has an entry, then run this report again.)

The report is pasted below as requested. I can't tell if there is any related BetterSurf reference (which was my original concern).

(Incidentally, I do not run Spybot S&D as resident - only manually, but did double check the settings per your advice.)

Advice on AVG Toolbar and whether to proceed much appreciated, Ron

Following up, after reading a thread about the difficulties others had with removing the AVG Toolbar, and confirming that it's own removal functionality did not work here either, I decided I didn't want it after all, and so ran the clean function in AdwCleaner without unchecking anything. Log is below.

Additionally, SpyBot S&D no longer appears to be picking up BetterSurf! (It's running as I type, but it's beyond the point where it was picking it up before, so I'm optimistic.) Thank you, thank you for the advice and for pointing me to this wonderful tool (AdwCleaner). -Ron

Let me know how your computer is doing after rebooting.
Ok, thx, did all that. No boot prompt, so I rebooted manually. Computer seems to be doing ok. My most important programs appear healthy. Boot time (as measured in event log - event ID=100), which has deteriorated over the last year or so, was not improved, not that I'd particularly expect it to be.

Since I'd never cleaned temp folders before, I got back over 40 gigs of space, though I suspect a lot of that was from the recycle bin. (Don't recall TFC warning it was going to empty the recycle bin? That's something I'd at least have liked to know in advance.)

For a conservative fellow like me, this was a drastic move. Just curious, why did you recommend it? Is it because PUPware tends to hide out in temp folders?

Anyway, I do appreciate the help. Many thanks, Ron

Yes, potentially unwanted applications will be in 'temporary' Internet files.

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs).
It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB). Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running apps. When finished, if a reboot is required the user must reboot to finish clearing any in-use temp files.

TFC only cleans temp folders. TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail. TFC requires a reboot immediately after running. Be sure to save any unsaved work before running TFC.

You will need to clean out the recycle bin on your own... You may want to look at CCleaner to do that for you. Be sure to uncheck any "bundled" toolbars that come with it Download CCleaner 4.11.4619 - FileHippo.com

The first and third quoted sentences are not true, at least not for the version of TFC to which your link pointed. The real time on screen report *said* when it was cleaning the recycle bin, and when it was done, the bin was empty. (I haven't found a residual copy of that report. If TFC leaves one, I'd appreciate knowing where it is.

I'm familiar with CCleaner, but am very cautious with it.

Let me know how your computer is doing after rebooting.
Since I'd never cleaned temp folders before, I got back over 40 gigs of space,

That's a heck of allot of files :shock:
Wonder how many this would find ?
http://www.sevenforums.com/news/307588-update-available-enables-you-delete-outdated-windows-update.html
You can exit out of this incase you don't want to remove them,
Cheers.

Yes, lot of neglected cleaning.

Thanks for the tip. When I try to install Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2852386) I get the message that this update is already installed (as I expected, since I keep my Win7x64 sp1 current with windows update.) However, when I press Win+R and type "cleanmgr" and choose my C drive, there is no option that reads: "Windows Update Cleaner." (All the other type files add up to ~36MB.) There are no hidden updates on my computer.

The documentation for the KB2852386 update seems to say that if there are no outdated updates, then the option won't appear. Perhaps the TempFileCleaner utility that I used (above) cleared them also? (Since it didn't warn me that it was going to sweep the recycle bin, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't warn about this either. BTW, IMHO, not the most courteous of behaviors. Especially when, apparently, it leaves no log behind.)

Any thoughts? Which directory actually contains old windows updates?

A suggestion will appear use it,
Once windows evaluates your hard drive,
Click on the System cleanup button,
Windows will evaluate your hard drive again,
This is where the Windows update listing will be on the list of boxes you can check,
Read them carefully I believe some refer to system restore points,
But the amount of wasted disk space will be listed next to each box,
If you do remove these updates,
You will need to restart your machine,
On restart windows will remove the updates and make the space writable again,
Most people recover on average 30-40 gigs of space ;)
Cheers.

Ah! Yes, that leads to the same utility, but I thought that button simply was for executing the selections you make above it. I should have read the documentation more carefully. Thank you!

There's about 125 MB of windows update files in there. Still contemplating if I want to remove them. Thanks again for the education about this utility. -Ron

Hi,
No problem,
125 mg's is hardly worth it might as well leave them,
Amazingly low amount of files there TFC would not of touch those ;)
Dang are you sure you have win-7 sp1 installed ?
Your install disk must of came with sp1 included ?
Cheers.
