Solved MalwareBytes 2.0.1 taking forever to scan

I always uninstall adobe reader and give them another pdf reader, or let the web browser do it.
No adobe programs-no vulnerability. Unfortunately flash is a evil machine, and is usually needed. But if you install chrome, they do not need flash plugins at all. Its built into chrome and updates when chrome does.

Gary could you take a look at a couple of things on your computer.
I have the 1007 beta version but Add and Remove only shows 1004.
Revo only shows 1004.
When I open Malwarebytes I get 2.0.2.1007 and it works just great.

All of them are in agreement on mine Jack.

I can not see how having tons of msconfig disabled startup entries could slow boot time. Unfortunately, when folks like us clean a computer, we usually fix/clean lots of stuff & then reboot... so it is hard to say which cleanup helped the reboot time. I'll play with it more later.

You could always check your reboot times with this tiny tool...

Starting with a clean Virtual Machine (VM) as the baseline, the reboot time was 15 to 16 seconds (according tor that reboot tool linked to in the quote above). I rebooted the VM several times to check the reboot time. Sometimes waiting 5 or so minutes to let all services start and other times rebooting quickly. It did not seem to matter.




I scripted the addition of 20,000 startup items to the registry. i.e. I asked Windows to start 20,000 different files that did not exist. But that had no measurable impact on the reboot time. The desktop was still ready to be used within 15 to 16 seconds after initating a reboot :-(


So... I scripted the addition of 300,000 startup items to the registry.
I asked Windows to start 100,000 different (non-existent) files via these 3 keys:
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run



I rebooted the VM several times while those bad/bloated registry entries were present. Rebooting the VM now took 21 to 22 seconds. Good - a level of bloat that I could work with.


Then I used msconfig to uncheck/move each of those 300,000 start up items:



(The script to uncheck those 300,000 boxes ran for about 15 hours.)


It took 17 seconds for the VM to reboot. So, using msconfig to disable 300,000 startup items in the registry did not impact rebooting.


As an aside, I don't like snake oil registry cleaners (like those advertized here) :-(

Small adverts were added to the first post of every thread. I sometimes* see them while logged in.

*depends on which computer/ISP/DNS combo I use.

I saw more than one OP complain that they were not recommending the link in their first post... but then I saw a member state the he/she had installed Registry Reviver tool per the TIP in the OP. (The advert inside of the OP really looked like it was a suggestion/tip from the original poster. The ad/link was inside the rectangle/posting area - not between posts.)

After a few conversations with forum admins, I think that this advert placement has been changed. I considered it to be a reputation issue. I did not want my username associated with this type of software.

edit: nope, the adverts are still there inside the OP.

I remember seeing that thread, I never see them when I'm logged in anywhere on the forum.

I could have been wrong about seeing the adverts while being logged in. I do weird things: Pale Moon is logged into this forum, but IE11 is not. IE11 inside a VM is not logged in either (that VM uses a different ISP/DNS combo). I'm using all 3 browsers to look at SF threads.

I also have a VPN/RDC/PDP connection inside another VM to my office desktop - where Pale Moon is also running and logged in to this forum (and IE10 is showing a forum thread, but not logged in). And then there is my cell phone (which is not browsing the forum at the moment

Very interesting. Thanks for the information. So it looks like deleting or disabling makes no difference to non existent entries then. I'll most likely keep doing it though, it helps with my ocd

7 Hours and 24 minutes. A definite improvement over the last version, which was 11+ hours. This is still without the rootkit option selected.

I don't do Custom Scans all that often, but this is better than the 23+ hours the original scan took.

I haven't read this entire thread but am doing so now. I just downloaded it and scanned using custom scan and it was taking forever with ARK enabled so I cancelled it. I rescanned using custom with ARK enabled, but selected 1 drive at a time. It went quite fast doing it that way.
