Hi Guys
your help would be appreciated. I have three computers (2 wired + 1 on wireless) After years of painless operation I find 1 of the wired pc's no longer communicates with the networked printer:(

The PC to which the printer is directly wired gives no problem (the printer is of course ticked as a shared item)
The wireless laptop also performs with no problem.

The remaining wired PC does not show the printer in the devices / printers and fax folder.
I click on add printer - then click on add network, wireless or bluetooth printer and the printer appears on a selection list. Immediately an error 0x00000057 is shown cannot connect to printer.

What is the correct approach to this problem for a simpleton like me?
Thanks in advance

Hello mate now forgive my ignorance but just what is meant by two "wired" computers to a printer as I have necver seen a printer with two connection sockets - if that is what you have.

Hi ICIT2LOL

Many thanks for coming back to me on this one.
Sorry if the original post was a little unclear - let me try again.

I should have said that 2 PC's are wired to my router/modem - the 3rd (laptop) is wireless. The printer is connected to one PC via a USB connection in the conventional way. All three are networked on a home group.

Full printing capabilities are available to the laptop, and also to the PC to which the printer is directly connected.

The remaining PC does not show the printer in the devices / printers and fax folder, so I click on add printer - then click on add network, wireless or bluetooth printer and the printer appears on a selection list.

Then when I select the required printer and try to confirm - Immediately an error 0x00000057 is shown with the message 'cannot connect to printer.'

Hope this clarifies the matter, and sorry if the original post was vague or misleading:o
Cheers

Ok mate now have a look at this as I am not really sure of stuff when to comes to networking. BEST FIX: Steps to Fix Error 0x00000057 it is amongst a plethora of Google hits thoung plus don't take any notice of the huge number of ads - annoying but the main article may contain some help.

Myself if I have more than one machine and one printer I use wifi for both machines. A case in point is recently my partner and I updated to a new printer and did just that - it works fine.

I have to be honest and say I have never hooked up a printer to a modem - always to the machines by a dedicated cable or wifi.

This seems to be the common factor in all the posts on this problem:
Is this folder present on the PC with the problem: C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository
If it is , is the folder empty?

The file repository folder is present, and contains literally scores of sub folders - hence my enquiry as to which specific one do you refer.

The fact that the folder is full says that it is writeable, so OK.
But you still have the problem. I, like ICIT2LOL do not have a printer set up like yours so I am running out of ideas here. I wonder if you were to install the printer software on the troublesom PC and see it that helps!

Pugatory, I see you have the printer USB connected to a PC which is working as a print server. May I suggest connecting the printer to the router and set it up with a static IP and the install as a local printer via TCP/IP individually on your 3 computers? This would make it so that the server PC need not be on at all times for others to print and removes the Print Server task from the main PC as well as simplifying other issues.
Free up a USB port
Make all printer functions user select-able rather than dependent on main PC

But you did say this “2 PC's are wired to my router/modem - the 3rd (laptop) is wireless”

Sorry am a bit lost on this now as in post#1 there was this
I have three computers (2 wired + 1 on wireless)

Now forgetting the wireless one and one that is the conventional connection I am at a loss as to what the other "wired" one is connected with - what at the machine end and what at the printer end .

Now if all three machine had the driver for the printer then it should able to be picked up.

I know it is not probably possible but a picture of the set up might make things a little clearer.

Hello again ICIT2LOL

I wrote - "I should have said that 2 PC's are wired to my router/modem - the 3rd (laptop) is wireless. The printer is connected to one PC via a USB connection in the conventional way. All three are networked on a home group."

If I modified this to read 2 PC's are connected by cable to the router, and all three are on a homegroup, would this help?
Perhaps the word wired is confusing for you.

Perhaps the word wired is confusing for you.

Ok now I am still confused because you said one machine was hooked up to the printer in the conventional manner and I take that as a USB port on the computer and the dedicated socket on the printer. But the quote above is now saying both machines are connected to the router.
If this is the case the router has to be hard wire to the printer?? If so then not hvaing to have done this myself I cannot extend any solution for the problem.

I still think that you would be better off using wifi on say two of the computers and a dedicated cable for the third or all three wifi'd to the computer.

This is all getting a bit confusing so I thought I would put the situation as I see it.
We have three PC's, two desktops and one laptop.

PC1 Connected to the printer via USB. Connected to the router with a LAN cable on Homegroup. (all working fine)
PC2 Connected to the router with a LAN cable on Homegroup. No direct connection to the printer Has been connecting to the shared printer till recently then gets the error message.
Laptop Connected to the router wirelessly on Homegroup. Connects with the printer wirelessly through the LAN cable to the router so needs PC1 to be active. Not directly connected to the printer. (All working fine) I am assuming that the printer is not directly connected to the printer wirelessly?

So the above if it is correct suggests to me that it is a printer driver problem. Have suggested that the printer software be installed on PC2 and if it is already installed then uninstall and re install it.
pegatory,
Can you remember what you did immediately before this problem occured? I wonder if it would be worth trying a system restore back to when the printer worked on PC2? Does anyone think that it could be a Win 7 update that caused this?

mitchell65, a win7 update could be to blame for a multitude of problems these days.
I'd still like a response from Purgatory regarding post #13
Maybe try connecting the printer directly to PC2 and see if it will print that way?

I agree with you both and well if all the machines have wifi capability and the printers' driver installed I would think it would be worth scrapping the cables and go completely wifi.

Now the update yes could be anything these days with the 10 crap going on and installing the drivers it is a no brainer. It could also be something really simple like a bad LAN cable between the problem machine and the router for that matter. Indeed the router could be suspect I don't know what everyone else thinks.
To test the cable the OP only has to try another cable:huh:
