Posting this from Panera in Ft Lauderdale where acquaintance with BSOD caught my attention. He says 10 years old Latitude 640 runs 32 bit 7 great with 1gb RAM, BSOD only just happened.

I told him the real geniuses are behind this door here.

Any help is much appreciated. :geek:

One and only minidump, not very helpfull. :)

Though this minidump points to ati2dvag.dll ati software\driver

Needs to update these, the oldest drivers ever posted here,no way to be compatible with win7.

Thanks. :D

ATI driver installed in XP SP2 mode which is the only option besides Standard VGA, allowing functional sleep and hibernate.

Do you see any way to make this driver work, perhaps earlier Compat Mode?

Also at my urging the driver was unzipped in Compat Mode then browsed from Device Manager to pick up driver. Would actual .exe install of driver (alone) also using Compat Mode give it better odds?

This is the only BSOD to date after a long run.

This Drivers & Downloads is for Latitude C640

I dont know if is the same model with same and compatibles software\drivers.The ati drivers though are most recent 2004. Well recent here is relative :D

This Display driver is not WDDM compatible, its obvious that it may be causing issues, reverting to the standard VGA driver would fix it. An older version might work.

Thanks guys. Owner wants to live with BSOD's rather than give up Sleep and Hibernate. Says he will wait and see.

I recall now that I rolled him back to Standard VGA a year ago after same issue, but he wanted Sleep functions so I'd installed ATI driver in XP mode - or at least unzipped the .exe in XP SP2 mode, browsing to it from Device Mgr. I will look for other drivers than Mobility Radeon 7500 from 2003 but not optimistic.

Action Center popped up to say this is due to Video not supporting DirectX 9, incompatible with Win7 (duh).

I wonder if running the actual driver installer .exe in XP sp2 Compat Mode, rather than just unzipping the files in Compat mode then browsing to driver from Device Manager, would cause it to adjust the DirectX calls somehow?

Nope - would only affect the installer. Once installed, it would run the exact same way.

Thanks, Carl. I kinda doubted Compat Mode is that smart.

Is there a way to force default to lesser Direct X just to avoid occasional BSOD on that issue alone?

Nope. If you could find a way to use the ATI Radeon 9000 driver that ships with Vista, that would "fix" things, but otherwise, no.
