1000w psu for a 700w pc

theoretical question regarding a non high end 1000W PSU that only needs 700w max in a system

I can get a good deal for a new 1000w psu where the system needs around 700w max?

if the pc doesnt get close to the max 1000w, would using a lower end psu be a problem for it as it isnt really taxing it?

my question is regarding stresses on the pc if it doesnt really need to work that hard to push 700w when it can do 1000w

reviews showed it as decent. not great. not amazing. gets the job done.

I wont mention the brand or model becsause I just want to know based on the theoretical question. its atx 3.0 ,12VHPWR 140mm fan. all the standard protections.

You have a pc that can draw 700w ?

Have you checked with any of the online things Power Supply calculator - calc for silent PSUs from be quiet!

yes at peak can be 700W

so what about a "not the best quality/brand" at 1000W spec to get it some leeway to handle the 700w, over an expensive 750w psu ?


not getting into the nitty gritty but overall. a 1000w psu that doesnt stress to its max which isnt a high end class a or b, can do the job fine?

I think there are sites that talk endlessly about psus. You could check one of those.

Do you have any idea how much power your computer actually uses? For all you know it idles about 50-100W and uses a max 300W. In that case a 1000W P/S would be a real overkill. A good 700W PS is much better than a cheap 1000W one. Also, power supplies when drawing low power are very inefficient.

To illustrate this I stress tested my computer with the following specs:
CPU: Ryzen 7 1700X
MBD: ASUS Prime X370-Pro
RAM: 16GB DDR4-2666
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB
P/S: Corsair RM750x (750W)
Note I can monitor power usage with software for the UPS
To stress the computer I ran Prime95 and Furmark
At idle the computer draws about 85W. When stress tested the computer draws about 295W.
