So I bought a 128GB Kingston DataTraveler 200 from someone for $30. He bought a few from eBay for $35 and thought that I would want one, so I bought one for $30.

Today, I had to do some backing up of a couple [somewhat] important Word documents. When I needed to access them, they were corrupted. Wouldn't open. Nothing else I transferred to it would work either (movies, pictures, etc). A lot of the file and folder names were just weird and random characters.

It had FAT32 as the filesystem already on it. Maybe I needed to format it to NTFS or something? I don't know whether I should try and sell it so someone or just trash it... Or maybe keep it? I really don't know.

I got several the same way back in Nov. from eBay. Kingston 64gb (probably a good Fake) had to be re-formatted because of the same problem you had. Been working fine ever since as NTFS format :)

Wow, really? That's good to hear! I was just about to post a Craigslist ad for this thing. I guess I'll keep it.

Although the write speeds are quite slow... Usually around 3.5MB/s. They advertise 10MB/s (under their "testing" conditions). Should that be a concern? I formatted it to NTFS. Hopefully it'll work now.

Yeah, it's definitely a fake or something. Files would eventually corrupt themselves and wouldn't open. Plus the write speed is extremely slow.

Definately dodgy. The cheapest I've seen them in Oz is $AU450. There's no way he got an authentic and working one for 30 bucks!

If you listen to Windows Weekly, Paul Thourett mentions an article posted by a corporate buddy of his.

Apparently people in China when making flash memory will throw all the bad pieces away after production. Later on other people come by and take those bad pieces and make fraudulent memory sticks out of it and sell them on E-Bay. The specific company mentioned was Kingston, glad I bought Corsair.

My USB drive went bad a few weeks ago, I formatted it to Fat32, or ExFat, and it works now. Try that.

Also, if you know how to mess around with microprocessors, you could always open it up, find the bad sections and fuse them off. :p

It's too big for FAT32. exFAT isn't compatible with anything other than Windows (I believe). I'll just try and sell this thing for a few bucks.
