1st problem w/this build-no ROM Drives

I just got around to formatting the HDD and then iinstalled two programs, Streets & Trips 2010 and Roxio Creator Pro 2011.
After that, the ASUS Sabertooth screen stays on for a long time, the welcome screen loads for a long time and I had no DVD-ROM Drives.
I did restart and no ROM Drives, then I turned it off and on, I now have one but not the other.
No red or yellow anywhere in Device Manager.
There was nothing for ROM Drives in Device Manager either, until I shut it down and then started again. It's showing just one ROM Drive.
What gives with this craziness?

Well first the obvious I would power down unplug pop the case and make sure all the cables are in good shape and properly secured at both ends (power and data cables both)

Then I would try telling the bios to refresh the escd data (if that bios has the option most asus boards do)

It sounds like a simple IRQ problem, or a cable issue. You should check those cables even if you are fairly sure they are good as shorts there can actually destroy the controller on the motherboard.

Are they being picked up correctly by the BIOS? If the BIOS can't see them, then neither can Windows or any other OS on the machine.

How do I go about that?
I'll check the cables but both ROM Drives where available until I loaded Roxio and Streets.

Does your problem magically go away if you uninstall Roxio????

Well what Dwarf asked applies there, are the devices appearing in the bios to begin with?
If they do not the software isn't even part of the equation.
If they are showing in the bios but being ignored by windows then it is possible the software has caused an issue.

The escd data reset is usually in the pnp section of the bios.

I personally haven't used roxio or nero in years, there are free and open source programs that do all the same work, in many cases faster and without any of the problems the horribly bloated software known as nero and roxio have.

Got any suggestions on free programs.
I went to Roxio because of Nero"s BS.
I didn't see "refresh the escd data" in the PnP section.
I had USB Legacy disabled and thought I had the PnP set to yes for plug and play right?
This time the bios page stayed on for a good two minutes and then the black starting windows screen was on forever.
Something is really whacked here.
Going to remove Roxio and check cables next.
This thing is using an OCZ SSD. All the bios post and loading at the beginning was pretty fast before this.
Formatting the HDD was just for my storage drive. The SSD is only 80GB.

Also I just noticed the ROM is gone again

The default recommendation around here for burning tends to be ImgBurn, which is pretty near flawless in my experience and works fine on Win 7.

A follow from good advice given.
Try this:
Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs
Your CD or DVD drive can't read or write media
The CD drive or the DVD drive does not work as expected on a computer that you upgraded to Windows Vista

It depends on what you are trying to do.
So far as light weight default data burning /audio burning and devices supported I would say this is among the best.
CDBurnerXP: Free CD and DVD burning software
despite it's name it's perfectly compatible with win 7. (and only 4.7 megs in size)
Will add mp3's and convert on the fly to burn like nero
Understand the nero image format and all the other typical ones. Can create and use iso's.
If there is some additional functionality you need let me know I'll offer up another.

OK- Swapped out 1 SATA Cable

I took this pig to the workbench and unplugged SATA cables and replaced one cable.
Rearranged the cables somewhat to the slots on the mobo and it started up fast this time and I have both DVD drives again.
Do you think I might have damaged the controller you mentioned from a shorted cable?

My main goal for Roxio was ripping CD's to Mp3.
When I purchased Nero many years, the *******s made me pay for some Mp3 encoder that didn't come w/the program.
I was pissed.
Kinda figured that program wouldn't work w/Windows 7, so I bought Roxio because a friend claims he uses it all the time for ripping. Don't think he is using 7 though.
Editing video and pictures and ripping is what I want.
Any other suggestions?

ImgBurn is a burner, not a ripper. I use CDex to rip. I have no idea what Roxio can or can't do other than that I hear a lot of trouble about it.

You think I did any damage to the controller you mentioned?
Should I disable USB Legacy in bios.
Pete C over at G4tv tech support forum had me do this on an XP system years ago.

I didn't mention a controller, but wouldn't expect it's damaged unless you see some evidence. I assume you are just guessing?

I've never had a reason to disable USB Legacy.

CDex and ImgBurn work well with BIOS defaults in my experience.

No if everything is still working you should be fine damage wise looks like we caught it in time.
You know media player can rip mp3's for you
you don't need extra software for that...

Have you looked at your system log and filtered for errors or warnings. I bet you will find something there that will help determine the cause of this (frankly I would suspect ROXIO).
