Hello all. I have to build a machine to handle legacy software and am attempting to have windows update get all the required components. My OEM disc has SP0 installed.. I have searched for, and found a handful of pages over time with a conflicting order of updates to install on a Fresh windows 7 SP1 system.

Can someone confirm if this order is correct for March 2022?
Again my install media has RTM installed and presume I have to first install SP1.

Looks good to me.

Another reason KB3138612 is favorable is because Windows Update will want it anyway. It ranks KB3138612 above KB3172605 with respect to importance. You are now free to install the updates in no particular order, SP1 provided. :-)

If you are doing a clean install of Windows 7 64-bit, do the following afterwards in this order:
1. Install Service Pack 1.
2. Install Simplix UpdatePack7R2 22.2.10 (which will take about 1 hour and will restart the computer 3 - 4 times).
3. Install the necessary device drivers.
4. Load Windows Update and "check for updates", then install the remaining important updates that appear.
After you are done, Windows 7 SP1 64-bit will be up to date to February 2022.

I went with Volume Z's suggestion.
For reason that, turnaround time is not critical on these systems. I would rather get patches directly from Microsoft as Windows Update is still working for windows 7. I am sure that will end the way it did for Windows XP.
XP went EOL on April 8, 2014 and windows update continued to function for some time after that.

For this I am planning on making final fresh-build backup images on a few unique systems once that is announced.

I am sure the Simplex update file provided does everything in less time and consumes less bandwidth.
However I am not interested in applying patches from a third-party.

Again thank you Volume Z. Your primary patches after SP1 allows a fresh W7 system to communicate with Windows update and fetches 116 remaining required patches.

I have created two batch scripts that I run after offline activation.

SP1
1_SP1-kb976932-x64.exe /unattend /forcerestart

Primary wusa.exe 2_KB4490628-x64.msu /quiet /norestart wusa.exe 3_KB3138612-x64.msu /quiet /norestart wusa.exe 4_KB4474419-v3-x64.msu /quiet /forcerestart

The software that needs a Windows 7 host doesn't need much in the way of other run-times. I can get those as needed but I do not plan to add to the base build.

Additionally. While I was testing this, I wanted the system to be activated. For those that do not know, offline activation (via telephone) is still available. There is multiple-digit key (installation ID) you provide to MS and they provide you are confirmation ID that you can type in.
If you are experimenting with multiple rebuilds, and the system does not change in hardware, the chances are good that the Installation and confirmation ID's are the same.

Below are example installation scripts I used to cut down on this process. After the second time I re-installed and activated the ID's were the same. There is no by-pass, just a shortcut for re installing the same key you would get back. As the windows RTM version (that I am using) does not required a CD-key to be entered during setup, I would just click the Next button.

Install CD-KEY via admin command line
slmgr /ipk ABC12-DEF34-HIJ56-KLM78-NOP90

Install Confirmation ID via admin command line
slmgr /atp 111111-222222-333333-444444-555555-666666-777777-888888

I wanted to check back in with the forum on my virgin install of Win 7, on an Optiplex 7050, using no third-party tools.

As you'll see in my prior threads, I was inadvertently slowed down by reading too much into a GitHub installation guide. I used the "clean" command in Win 10 for my HDD, and that prevented the Win 7 installer from seeing the HDD. My solution was to re-format that HDD using the new volume function in Win 10. I also switched that HDD to MBR, although I'm not sure I've verified yet whether or not MBR was helpful for my install.

I installed Win 7 from the official DVD, and went through the familiar rites of passage with drivers:
(1) The Dell NIC driver extractor did not work.
(2) I got a TP-Link NIC, and their driver broke my Win7 system, so I had to use system restore to get back in to Win 7.
(3) I discovered the "manage" "device manager," which allowed me to let Win 7 look for a driver.

It turns out Win 7 could not find a good driver for the TP-Link NIC, but one of the Dell drivers worked for the Dell NIC. I never would have found it on my own, because it was for differently named hardware not appearing in the Optiplex 7050 owner's manual.

I come back to the forum today because thesavo refers to a July 2016 KB3172605 roll-up. I don't see that one on the list of updates.

Another paradox: my system is indicated as Win 7 SP1, but the updates pages lists a 9.1mb service pack 1 update. So I guess I have to begin with this one, and then work my way down the list above, 4490628 and 4474419 (I've already done 3138612 - it was required to see the list of updates).

So it looks to me like the list is:
(1) 3138612
(2) 976932
(3) 4490628
(4) 4474419

- - - Updated - - -

I don't see 4490628.

I guess I'll proceed in chronological order after 976932 & 4474419.

- - - Updated - - -

These updates are getting annoying - Microsoft has to tell me on each and every update that I should be using a newer version of Windows

Anyone doing a virgin install of Win 7 in 2025 wants Win 7

- - - Updated - - -

Win 7 updates pretty fast on a 7050.

The only ones I couldn't get are the 3 final rollups, 4493132, 4516048, and 4516065.

Maybe I'll give it another try after I get the rest of the Dell drivers installed (now that I know how to do).
