After reading several tutorials/posts, some dating from 2014, I'm confused about which updates and in which order I need to install so that my clean install of Windows 7 SP! will be up-to-date.
Should I start with: KB4490628 [.msu] => KB4490628 - Servicing stack update for Windows 7 SP1 - [12-Mar-2019],
KB4474419 [.msu] => KB4474419 SHA-2 code signing support update for Windows 7 SP1 - [10-Sep-2019],
KB4516655 [.msu] => KB4516655 [New] - Servicing stack update for Windows 7 SP1 - [10-Sep-2019]?

Hi lisa374,

KB4516655 [.msu] => KB4516655 [New] - Servicing stack update for Windows 7 SP1 - [10-Sep-2019]?

That is part of what I have posted for several members. Here is actually what I posted for members who are having problems installing the latest WU's. As you can see, I say "in the same order" . . .

I have put this together which has worked for a few members. The latest WU’s require that the following are installed FIRST . . .

KB4490628 [SSU]
KB4474419 [SHA-2]
KB4516655 [NEW SSU]

If any of the above WU’s are NOT installed, then download the .msu files below in the same order to the desktop and install them =>

KB4490628 => KB4490628 [SSU] - Servicing stack update for Windows 7 SP1 - [12-Mar-2019].
KB4474419 => KB4474419 [SHA-2] - Code signing support update for Windows 7 SP1 - [10-Sep-2019].
KB4516655 => KB4516655 [NEW SSU] - Servicing stack update for Windows 7 SP1 - [10-Sep-2019].

Now run WU's again!

I hope this helps!

Hi lisa374,

[1] So you have just clean installed Win 7 SP1 Professional x64-bit, is that correct?
[2] Have you run Windows Updates?
[3] What stage of updating are you presently at?
[4] Have you seen the posts about updating the OS after a clean install using DISM++ or SIMPLIX?

I hope this helps!

Thanks Paul for the reply.
1. just did a clean install of Win 7 SP! Home Premium x64-bit. I have, but don't need?, Professional.
I have disabled all Windows Updates, but; KB947821 has been successfully installed.
I'm attempting to make a list, or use a automagic pgm, in order to install just the updates I need.
I read the posts about DISM++ but didn't really "get the drift".
BTW, I've re-installed Win 7 about 8 times and the last 2 I used a list that I found on this site. Can't file it now and the list was somewhat old. It started by installing the Oct.? 2014 "big" update and went from there. But installed nothing from 2017 onward. I think the list is too outdated.

Hi lisa374,

I think you are referring to installing the KB3125574 [Convenience rollup update]. This is the old outdated method of getting quite a few updates installed in one package!

As SIW2 has mentioned, SIMPLIX is the quicker preferred method . . .

SIMPLIX - Running/Adding Updates Procedure

Download the latest SIMPLIX UpdatePack [for Win 7 SP1 x86-x64 / 2008 R2 SP1 x64] from here => SIMPLIX UpdatePack.

Run the UpdatePack => click Install.

It will update your OS automatically [it will re-boot a couple of times during the update process which is normal] and DOESN’T include any telemetry updates or processor checks [disables/patches detection of processor generation and hardware support when scanning or downloading updates through WU]. It installs the correct USB3 drivers and cleans up when it has finished. It requires NO user input.

I hope this helps!

Download and run simplix. It will reboot a couple of times and cleanup. You don't need to do anything, it is all taken care of.
https://update7.simplix.info/UpdatePack7R2.exe
OK,I'll just do it. Don't really like to "just-do-it" without understanding but I guess I'll have to.
Thanks. Can't now get through Google translation so I'll try later today to download simplix.

Hi lisa374,

Download the latest SIMPLIX UpdatePack [for Win 7 SP1 x86-x64 / 2008 R2 SP1 x64] from here => SIMPLIX UpdatePack.

Thanks Paul. Guess I'll just bite-the-bullet and simply do as you and SIW2 suggest and see what happens.

Many members have successfully updated their OS's using SIMPLIX. You can run WU afterwards to see if there any other updates that you think will be beneficial to your OS.

I hope this helps!

Does #4 specify recommended/not recommended installs?

I would like to find out what security updates are ok to install after KB3172605.

I think I read somewhere that KB4054518 (2017-12 SU) was good with no nasties.

Is that true?

Is there a thread that better addresses avoiding M$ crap post KB3172605?

Hi Fuseak,

Welcome to SevenForums!

I would like to find out what security updates are ok to install after KB3172605.

Firstly, I think you will find that KB3172605 is only relevant if you are using the OLD method of updating the OS after a clean install [see below] . . .

[1] - KB3177467 - Servicing Stack Update - October 2018 [Supersedes the KB3020369 Servicing Stack Update - April 2015].
[2] - KB3125574 - Convenience Rollup Package - May 2016.
[3] - KB3172605 - Functional Update Rollup [THIS ONE IS IMPORTANT] - July 2016.
[4] - KB3179573 - Functional Update Rollup - August 2016.

I think I read somewhere that KB4054518 (2017-12 SU) was good with no nasties. Is that true?

KB4054518 is the Security Monthly Quality Rollup Update for December 2017.

Does #4 specify recommended/not recommended installs?
Is there a thread that better addresses avoiding $MS crap post KB3172605?

There are two methods that can be used for updating the OS after a clean install, they are DISM++ or SIMPLIX [preferred]. Here is an overview of them both . . .

DISM++ [Deployment Image Servicing and Management] Overview

DISM++ is a FREE implementation tool that has the ability to perform Windows Updates [WU]. Some of the advantages [but not all] are:

[1] The GUI is very easy to understand and use.
[2] It is much faster than M$’s WU because it uses a different engine.
[3] It downloads the latest WU DB from the M$ servers, scans your OS, and then lists the updates available.
[4] It doesn’t install superseded updates like M$ does.
[5] It gives you the option of what you want to install.
[6] The pre-ticked updates are what is recommended and are similar to the WU critical and recommended updates. The un-ticked updates are similar to the WU optional updates.
[7] It warns you if an update:
  • Includes telemetry.
  • Has known issues with certain hardware.
  • Needs exclusive access.
  • Is suspect.
  • Your OS doesn't need it.
  • Has any other known issues.
[8] It doesn’t require re-booting between updates.
[9] It can be used to either update an install.wim image OFFLINE, or to update the LIVE OS.

SIMPLIX

It will update your OS automatically [it will re-boot a couple of times during the update process which is normal] and DOESN’T include any telemetry updates or processor checks [disables/patches detection of processor generation and hardware support when scanning or downloading updates through WU]. It installs the correct USB3 drivers and cleans up when it has finished. It requires NO user input.

I hope this helps!

Are there instructions on how to use Simplix to integrate the updates into the wim?

My Computer

OS
Windows 7 HP x64
UpdatePack7R2-19.10.10.exe /WimFile=path_to_wim /Index=IndexNumber

Optional switches include /NoUsb if you don't want to include simplix's usb3 pack
/IE11 if do you want to include IE11 /TEMP if you want to specify instead of the default

Example:
UpdatePack7R2-19.10.10.exe /ie11 /NoUSB /WimFile=C:\extracted-iso\sources\install.wim /Index=3

Or use this:

Update your Win 7 installation media.

AceMagoo,

Do you understand what mounting an image means.
it is not a permanent folder on your drive!

Once the disk image has been mounted, its contents will appear as a physical disk in the computer. ... Disk images can also be unmounted, which may free up some RAM used by the system to mount the image. To unmount a disk image in Windows, open "My Computer," select the disk image, and click "Eject this disk."

install.wim is a folder within an ISO image that contains
WIM File Extension - What is a .wim file
