Solved 2nd Monitor Not Working

Greetings,

I am running dual monitors (22" Hans-G LCD) with NVIDIA 512MB 9600GT graphics card. On restart (I shut it down last night) one monitor is not displaying anything. The power light blinks very slowly and you cannot see anything in the display area. If I drag a window into that monitor it cannot be seen, but I know it is there. This has happened once before on restart after installing updates. Also, the power button does not seem to affect it. You cannot turn it off unless you unplug it.

I have tried unplugging it from the power source and the HDMI cable and neither option works. I have also tried to using an earlier restore point. Nothing seems to work.

(EDIT 1: Is it possible it is in sleep mode and won't wake up? It seems as thought the power light is acting like it's in sleep mode.

EDIT 2: Just put the monitors to sleep. The monitor that's working the light went to amber and stayed steady. The non-working monitor kept blinking green really slowly. I'm stumped and bummed.)

When I had this problem before I'm not really sure what I did to get it working again. I tried everything then too except going back to a previous restore point. It seems it began "working" again after I unplugged it, but that has not helped this time.

It's sounding like to me that there is a short in/at the on/off power button of the monitor. Can you wiggle the on/off power button and see if that might work. Have you googled for the same issue and see if there are any hits that are the same or similar to what you are experiencing? Other than that you can take it to a repair shop and see what they can find...it may but something very simple and easy to fix.

I'm beginning to think you're right on the power button. However, not much on Google on this problem.

The power button will shut off the light if I hold the button.

Try unplugging the monitors and allow it them to fully discharge for several minutes and then swap them so the effected monitor is the primary and report what happens.

Alan, sorry it took so long to get back to you. I just tried this. I also swapped cables and still no help. Nothing changed. I think it's a hardware malfunction. Probably the switch.

Can you borrow another monitor of any make and try to see if it's the Han's G? If it is then your next move is to call them and hopefully it's still under warranty. These days what's a shame is you're likely to more cheaply replace the unit them send in and have repaired unless it's under warranty and Han's G will step up.

Good thinking but no way it's still under warranty. It's @ least 2 years old. Both monitors are Hans G units. The one works fine, the other is down for the count. BTW, tried to rep ya, but looks like I need to spread some more around before I can hit you again.

You tried another monitor and it worked on the second cable? If so then it's for sure the monitor. Have you tried connecting the faulty monitor via a different connection on it's back panel? Maybe that will fool it or jump start it and if you get it working you can make this a never sleep in it's settings???

More good advice. I did swap monitors and cables - nothing worked. I just tried a VGA cable and still nothing. Looks like my monitor is down.

Ok, just did the final bit to confirm. I connected the monitor to my wife's laptop via VGA cable. Still not working. I've got a malfunctioning monitor.

If you think you're headed towards a replacement monitor then maybe you can try to open it up and see if maybe it's just a malfunctioning switch? At the very least I'm sure it's interesting just what you'll find going on inside. You may google the monitor or youtube it...never know, someone with the same problem solved or opened up???

I looked @ the back to open it up a few days ago. Looks like I need a tool I don't have. Not surprised.
