3 monitor problem

Having just purchased a 1080p LED to be used as a 3rd monitor as well as for freeview HD, I have
discovered my 2 laptop graphics cards only allow 2 monitors to be set up.

Intel HD graphics 3000
Geforce GT 540m

Samsung RF 711

Laptop + 2 external monitors - currently 1 monitor (1920x1200) via hdmi - 2nd via vga which was
detected, but unable to use all 3 displays together.

After looking for possible solutions, several people with the same problem claimed a usb - hdmi converter gave them a 3rd independent display.

Something like this:

I have also heard there are no guarantees this would work.

Anybody care to advise me on whether to purchase one?

I only need the 3rd monitor for displaying documents and such while working, so not to be used for
video or gaming.

I have heard of the USB to HDMI adapters and I know that they can work. I can not say whether or not that specific one would work for you. I would do some research on USB to HDMI adapters and see which ones have the best reviews and are compatible with your laptop. Not for sure but the USB adapter might only duplicate your main screen, not extend it, so you might not be able to achieve what you are looking to do. Again, I don't know for sure just my 2 cents.
