Hey,

so i have a 3tb hard drive, i hooked it up to my windows pc, as soon as i plugged it in, it said it needed to formatted before it can be read, cool..

but, when doing so, its reformatted it at a lower capacity.

so I've gone int disk management, found the drive, and this is when i quite literally died - their is NO unallocated space -

in properties, the max capacity of the drive is only 746gb,

usually from past experiences i would see a greyed out unallocated space not being used, but there isn't any -

many thanks in advance,

stuart

Not only that, the OP has to tell us whether the 3TB external drive is a new one or an old one which was in use and accessible fully before on his PC..Just prosaic description devoid of essential details does not enthuse me to look into it :D. Whether it was an MBR drive or GPT drive as it came from the factory ( if he knows)

Offhand I could have shot this missive " Try updating the Intel RST driver " but it could be a hit or miss :D.

In the old days, you couldn't go above 2 TB on a single drive partition without doing some tricks. That limitation hasn't applied in a while, but you never know...

If my concern is applicable to your situation, you should have gotten 2 TB after doing a format, not 746 GB.
