Well I can't speak for you but I've gone in recent years from 120gb to currently on my desk I have 6 TB's of storage plus my 64gb SSD and countless flash drives. I've become a real storage and back up whore ! So I don't see any drive manufactures demise anytime soon. Even the touted durability of SSD is surely greater than a mechanical spinner but trust me.......something will show later, like "silicon rot" patent pending ! :roflmao:
Yeah, I see what you are saying. We become pack rats. They want us to buy, buy, buy - and we buy, buy, buy. I must be sending an order off to Newegg every week. That stuff is so tempting.

Now I am looking at this Raptor to run on my latest toy (still en route with FedEx). The Raptor will go into my air cooled external USB3 enclosure and the internal disk will be replaced by a 90GB Vertex2 (which is already sitting on my desk). I am really curious how fast my Macrium images will run with that setup.

Did I need a new Laptop - or any new disks to add to the dozen? - of course not. It was just an addition to the 3 laptops I already have, not to mention the 2 desktops. But this one has a backlit keyboard and nice specs ( I also ordered the full HD display). Hopefully that will help with my poor eyesight - there is always an excuse for new gear.

I sure hope you are not too late with the Silicon Rot. Sure hope it has not already been invented and is in my computer.

Talking about backups... once I crashed and lost everything, cost me a bunch of money. Now I have 4 externals about 3.5TB worth and always use 3 different backup programs. I keep backups on at least 2 externals and on my other desktop. I backup user files and email by hand once a week and keep them on 2 externals and my other desktop. I won't be caught with my pants down again. I guess you could say I wear both a belt and suspenders. I seriously doubt there is a bigger backup extremist than me.

I am not sure I would have a use for a 1TB SSD. I have acres of disk space that are empty. But the conversion of my vinyls and hundres of cassettes is still awaiting action. I am just too lazy to do it - plus all my vinyls are in Germany where I am only during the summer.

Booting is quick but where I really notice it is opening large programs like Photoshop, ACT, Outlook, Media Monkey and such. Before 10-15 seconds, now they open in like 1.5 seconds if that. Between the Sata III SSD and my new Quad core CPU the system is like nothing I've ever been able to afford.

Now all you need is a BIG SSD in a USB3 enclosure - or maybe settle for a Raptor.
