In order to trip the gfi, only a tiny amount of current needs to leak to ground, the whole point of the gfi is that it reacts much sooner and faster than a breaker. Breakers are there to protect the wiring and prevent fires, gfi is there to try to prevent electrocution.

I wouldn't use those speakers any longer and would return them for an exchange. If they are causing the gfi to trip, they have at least a high resistance internal short and are defective, plain and simple.

I guess I'm wondering why this is still a mystery to you? You have a short with the speaker system it's that simple.
The way electrical is pulled is to tie a couple of outlets between several rooms together that way if it trips a fuse you still have the other outlets in that room live....till you sort out the issue. Looks like you have 2 rooms and a bathroom tied together on that one circuit and any time you have the chance of water (bathrooms, kitchen or garage) then you'll find the GFI for added safety.

If there was a short why is it now working? you'd get the same scenario it seems to me once again but it's all working now. I put that GFI in the bathroom at least 20 years ago and there's never been a problem until recently.

Forget the GFI it's doing it's job. The issue is with the power cord or intermittent shorting of the amplifier that's where you look and if it's working now great but what if the short in the amplifier or power cord leads to heat and a spark......not good but likely the GFI and breaker will trip but if I was in that house I would fix and or find that short and if I couldn't then that speaker system would be pitched !

Maybe it's best just to return them, after a call or email, with a note of explanation of what's been happening. I don't want a nice toasty marsh mellow in the floor or desktop.

Boy that's for sure ! I love good sound believe me but save the smoke and sparks for the fireplace !
