66% of all Windows users still use Windows XP

In September, XP represented 54 % of all Windows with median method, and 48 % of all OSes.

Enterprise market surely explains why XP is still the most used OS. OMHO, as 7 won't have SP1, XP marketshare will stay very important, contrary to MS wishes.

My dad business still runs XP. He says it times for a new computer, but he simply cant afforded it. He tryed stealing my copy of Windows 7

Also there is this shop in my local mall, and you can see its computer screen and they still use Windows 2000 or older, reasons i know this is because task bar is gray and the start menu has the old windows logo with the lines coming off the flag

Curious which app? Many people refuse change, I've yet to come across that one application or one driver that refuses to work in Windows 7.

I work in public safety and the app is a from a private vendor. It will run on Win7 x32, but it is very sluggish and extremely slow. Win7 x64 was even worse. The performance is so bad it prompted me to find an alternative so that I could continue using Win7 x64.

Dual boot was an option, and I tried it for a short time, but having to reboot back and forth became tedious. I then tried the XP mode and so far that has been the best option. I get to keep Win7 running and can quickly switch to XP when needed.

We still have some servers running WinNT 4 where I work. Talk about prehistoric.....

In my company, we are about to jump on the W7 train. Starting next week, Dell will supply us new computers and disc images to install on our offices and manuf plants. Problem is, we already know some software is not yet supported and for those, no XP Compatibility, but pure XP. I believe about 30% of all our machines will stay using XP -- that still accounts for a couple thousand machines worldwide...

An additional reason could be that there is no pressing need to upgrade hardware anymore, 3-4 yr old core 2 duo's that came with XP or Vista are still fine for most people. Most people only get a new OS when they purchase a new machine.

Yep, I did that. It didn't make any difference whatsoever.

And there was me thinking Win 7 was still selling like hot cakes! I like it anyway, I quite liked Vista, I was never too keen on XP. I'm in a bit of a minority there I believe.

Hi guys.

This type of stuff is usually riddled with obfuscation or sheer ignorance on the part of the people peddling these types of Statistics.

Home users can change their OS or even their entire computers as many times as they want to - and can just do it "when they feel like it".

Managing an OS change say of over 8,000 corporate computers on the LANS of a large International company CANNOT be done in 5 minutes.

Not only do a zillion users have to be trained in using the new systems there are usually a lot of VERY EXPENSIVE applications such as SAP ERP type software that needs to be DECENTLY tested that it will actually work on a New OS and a proper migration path needs to be planned as well. Sometimes the ERP software doesn't perform as expected on the newer OS -- and it can take YEARS also for these companies to actually upgrade their stuff too.

There are also financial considerations -- such as new hardware has to be acquired, software licenses purchased and 1001 items of "change control", planning and fall back.

Going from XP to VISTA was a No No for most corporations -- at the time the hardware wasn't up to it and the other applications weren't ready.

W7 is stable, and runs quite decently on all sorts of hardware so you will probably see some major corporations beginning to plan for a W7 roll out across their Lans -- but this will still take a FEW years to complete.

People need to understand the whole difference between joe bloggs going to a computer store, buying a new PC and installing a whole load of new applications and trying to organise a major OS upgrade in a large corporate environment.

I agree with jimbo45 if I may. To change over form XP to Windows 7 could and most likely will cost a large company a lot of money and time. They would have to leave the XP systems operating while testing Windows 7 with all the application and training there people.

Productivity will take a nose dive too. For people that have never used Vista or windows 7, it will take them time to find there way around. Some will catch on quick some won't.

Most of the people I know who still use xp but want to upgrade to windows 7 either can't afford a computer capable of running windows 7 or have no choice but to stick with xp because that is what is being used at their place of employment

I was just browsing through the log files for my web server for the past six months and wasn't at all surprised to find that XP is still by far the most popular OS that my visitors use.

There were a few others on the list that I found really interesting, though:

Windows 95: 5709
Windows 98: 4197
Windows CE: 1532
Palm: 358
OS/2: 2

Really? People still use those?!? :shock:

I was also a little surprised to see that Vista users still outnumber Win7 users on my visitor list.

I find it surprising that the Windows 95 users outnumber the Windows 98 users. Before XP, Win98 was immensely popular.

Well thanks to the excellent tutorial section here at SevenForums many members are probably running a duel boot of XP & Windows 7 ensuring compatibility of older software/games that will not run on seven or XP mode (those who have the luxury of XP mode)
