I'm running windows 7 pro 64 bit as administrator. Installed 7-zip portable. When I tick the "Integrate 7-Zip to shell context menu" and then "OK", I get the error message:
"an event was unable to invoke any of the subscribers" and it won't integrate.

Anyone have any ideas?

thanks in advance

If it is a 32 bit program it will not work on the 64 bit context menu. You need 64 bit version to do that. That is the same of all programs unless the developer has added extensions. :geek:

One way you can work around it is to use a 32 bit file manager like FreeCommander 2009.0b. It has options how to handle 32 bit and 64 bit context menus.

Indianatone, MilesAhead, thanks for replying.

It says 7-zip portable is suppose to work on 64 bit systems but could be wrong. I'll probably just try the non-portable 7-zip specifically for 64 bit from their site 1st. The portable version came from portableapps.com.

Will get back afterwards.

thanks guys.

Sorry it took a bit to get back to you. Power to my house went out for a minute.

I went to 7-zip/tools/options/7-zip and ticked "Integrate 7-zip to shell context menu" and I get the error message.
Here's a screen showing I only have an Administrator account and another of the error message.

Right-click and access the Options using 'Run as Administrator'. Its different to using a Windows 7 Administrator account.

OK you must be running the 64 bit version of 7Zip. Right click on the shortcut of the program and in properties check the box "Run as Administrator"

7-zip context menu

Well I get the exact same error message but that's probably because it's already integrated. It was integrated when running the installer - no need to use Tools> Options to try to do something that's already been done.

Test:

Locate a zip file and right click it. You should see something like this:

7Zip context menu.jpg

If that's what you see - no further steps are required!

Yep.....'Run as Administrator' is not the same as running Windows 7 as administrator. Two different concepts entirely.

Yeah it's totally different from XP in a lot of ways. There are quite a few things I absolutely HATE about it so far in the few days I've been running it. Especially the taskbar. I guess I just got set in my ways being on XP for sooo many years. lol

Anyway thanks again.

What drove me nuts when I started with W7 was the snap and windows jumping around. I disabled that. But the things I like about TaskBar are pinning and Progressbar Buttons. It's very cool to see progress in the TaskBar Button. No need to worry if the progress window of the application gets covered over. They kept that in W8. It just doesn't look as good as on W7. :)

Not sure what pinning is but the Progress bar buttons are cool.

However a few things I absolutely abhor on win7 are:

1) The taskbar doesn't show the number of windows/folders opened anymore. I browse with a lot of windows opened and I like to know the number.

2) They (windows) are ordered the exact opposite way as xp (asc/desc) with the newest window opened at the bottom of the column instead of the top.

3) And the scroll down through said column seems about 3 times as slow as it was on xp.

4) The taskbar grouping. On xp it was by individual program, with it becoming grouped in a column after (iirc) 5 windows opened whereas on windows 7 it seems like it's global, where if I don't have a lot of programs running I can have 7 or more windows opened from one program and it still doesn't column-group them yet.

5) And the thing I absolutely hate worse than anything else is that (on an opened folder) I can't drag and move things around inside it anymore. And if I say extract something from a rar it immediately goes into the sort order instantly (asc., desc., date, size, etc,,,) instead of the bottom of the folder like xp. Cannot state strongly enough how much I hate this.

Instead of having a QuickLaunch you can pin a program shortcut to the taskbar. If you have files you often use with that program you can drag the file from Explorer onto the Taskbar icon for the program and then click to pin it. To run that program with that file, right click the Taskbar icon for the program and left click the file in the list of pinned files.

Also it automatically creates jump lists for programs that support them. For example a browser may have the most frequent urls in the jump list. Being able to run stuff choosing the param from the jump list or pinned items.. once you get used to it you miss it when going over to Vista or earlier.

Also in W7 the Superfetch system works much better than on XP or Vista. Memory is used more efficiently.

If you like Eye Candy the Glass on W7 makes it possible to use themes with transparency etc.. Way cooler than XP. Unfortunately it is crippled in W8. That still has glass but it looks like crap.

Give it a chance. For a long time I searched trying to get a W7 type Taskbar that would run on Vista because of the W7 behaviors I didn't like. There was none. But after awhile with disabling the most annoying behaviors I could, I got accustomed to it. Programs where the entire program window is frosted glass, like clocks etc.. look very cool and are fun to use. It definitely has its good points. :)
