7601 - This copy of Windows is not Genuine.

Hello,
I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 which I purchased, used, from a former neighbor.
She had upgraded it to Windows 7 Home Premium and that is what is currently installed.
She had given me the MS box and info, when I purchased, but in a subsequent move it was
somehow lost or stolen.

A few months prior to the message appearing, I got a virus, or something on the machine
and discovered the recovery partition of the machine had been "corrupted" and did not work.
I do not recall how I recovered from this as it has now been so long ago; but I believe the
help was via Dell Support, or maybe in spite of them.

A few months ago, after owning this laptop for nearly 2 years, I suddenly started getting the
7601 -Not Genuine message. I was away from home and needed it fixed so I found someone
locally who charged me $30 to fix it. It seemed like all was well... that is, until a few days ago
when the machine started spitting up the same error message.

I seem to be able to use the laptop just fine, at this point, but the messages are soooo annoying...
so I turned to the internet to see if I could fix the issue myself. What I found, eventually led me here;
So I come pre-armed with the MGADiag results.

Two additional, perhaps useful, data points:
This machine is currently protected by Avast! and
I did try activating online and by phone without positive results.
I look forward to any help.
Here are the unedited MGAD results:

Layback Bear,
Please see my post again. I did mention failed online and phone activation attempts.
Maybe I can assume that the "Grace Time Expired" comment may have something to do with the
apparently 'temporary' fix I got in Florida. Thanks for your suggestion.

A friend suggested I validate windows using a link he provided me.
This is what resulted:
Windows validation detected and repaired an activation exploit (used to prevent built-in Windows licensing components from operating properly). You must activate Windows in order to complete the repair process and be able to use the full functionality of Windows. Not to worry, we can help you with that.

Now Windows may have made some alterations to my system that are inalterable. It offers to sell me a new license for $109. I can't afford that at the moment.
I think I'll run and post another MGADiagnostic to see if there has been a change.

Grace time expired means there never was a product key used and the 30 day grace period has passed to enter one.

So yes, it very well could be related to the temporary fix you got.

Not know when you tried to activate, before or after your shop had repaired your system and what your log states; I will stick with my
recommendation. It cost nothing to try.

The installed Key is an MSDN-type Key and not valid unless you are a subscriber to one of MS's services.
There appears to be an Activation Exploit present also - in an attempt to circumvent activation and validation requirements.

I assume the COA sticker on the machine is for Vista? Did you also get the Upgrade disks and Key from your neighbour when you bought the machine? If not, then you'll have to revert back to Vista, since you have no license for Windows 7.

Thank you Noel for your added wisdom.

@evath

That means your next step is to buy a legal copy of Windows 7 with the proper COA key so you can activate it properly.

Once you have done that please post another log for our experts to take another look.

Layback Bear,
Yes, I did try to reactivate before tech fixed in Florida and once, now that the error has appeared a 2nd time.
No dice.

And to NoelDP, Yes. This was originally a VISTA machine. I did have the disks which she gave me/sold me with the machine.
Unfortunately, I can't put my hands on them either because they were inadvertently thrown away, lost, or stolen at the time
of my move last year.

I know I used the software once since buying the machine because of a HDD crash, and it has been working just fine now
until the issue with the virus/crash that ended up giving me the 7601 error.

I do not want to have to pay $109 for something I already purchased.

So why is there so much conflicting information? and in light of all this info I'm giving
do you think there is no other option than to buy a new license agreement?
If I did buy another, just saying, would I have to do a new install that would delete
all on my machine? I know I could revert back to VISTA... ugh... or I could use my
other MS software to upgrade to Win 8 (which I hated, and IF they are still allowing
upgrade), but I do not have a way to back up all my data at the moment due to
a crashed Toshiba Canvio and so I fell like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.
If I did do an new install, can it be done in such a way as to only overwrite the OS files
and leave my data alone?

Thanks

When you acquired the computer - were you also given the box that the Windows 7 disks came in? in that there should be the Proof of License label, on which the Key is printed for Retail (including upgrade) licenses. That Key can activate the current install if you can find it.
