Sadly not - followed the link and all the setting are correct. I've tried disabling anti virus/firewall to see if thats the issue but again the error code persists

OK - back to basic triubleshooting methods then.

What Anti-Virus are you using?
What other security software is currently installed?
What other AV's have EVER been installed (since the last reformat)??

Has any Norton software ever been installed?

It's a new laptop which came pre installed with a Mcafee free trial which I removed as I had AVG 2013 pre installed. Other than that just the standard windows ones which are disabled due to AVG

OK - McAfee leaves large amounts of dross behind, even if never fully installed.

Download the McAfee removal tool from:

http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.

when complete, reboot.

After the reboot, open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

NETSH WINSOCK RESET

You'll be advised to reboot - do so.

I'm tempted to also ask you to remove AVG and run the AVG Remover - but let's wait until we see if the MCPR trips anything.

OK - unless you've already reinstalled AV, please install MSE at least temporarily. Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows
Update it and run a full system scan.

Also,
Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM PRO' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

Delete everything it finds

You lost me?
Are you saying that you can install updates downloaded from the Download Center? - but Windows is still refusing to do a Search for updates? - or what?

Sorry that didn't come out correctly. I've just had to do a manual reboot for something and the updates are available box appeared in the corner and they've installed as they normally would so looks like the fixes provided by yourself and Tom have done something

Ah - that sounds a lot better :)

Good luck with it! Keep an eye on it until after next month's updates and see what it does without kicking it...

Hi Sarah,

One last thing to do, just to tidy up after ourselves.

Please download this file: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/16537616/Sarah.zip

And extract the four files to the root folder of your C: drive, such that they are in the following locations C:\img0 etc.

Command Prompt

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    icacls C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_microsoft-windows-s..l-wallpaper-windows_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_none_370717dbca22c586\ /restore C:\img0sxs

Hi Sarah,

I have been in contact with niemiro (the developer of SFCFix) and we did in fact run into a bug with the RestorePermissions process which has since been fixed. Could you delete your copy of SFCFix.exe as it is now outdated and follow these instructions:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFix.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.txt - do not rename it
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it
  6. SFCFix will now process the script
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFC.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl + C) and Paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text
