A windows 7 install is going very slowly at copying and expanding file

I am setting up an HD and the Windows 7 install routine seems to be going very slowly. Halts on
1% then 2% etc for what seems long periods.

The computer is old. And it has 4Gb. It may be just caving as an old rig. But can memory write
problems and such be the cause? As I recall I ran MS Memtest when doing the current set up.

Or expanding the Cores through MSI software?

It appears that after resetting the CMOS from these install difficultiesm the CPU has reverted
to three cores. I had not ever attempted these kinds of things before but it's all done
with MSI software. Is the CPU a possible source of all this slowness?

Right now I don't have a good place to start a diagnostic. Is there a routine on the Repair disk menu
or in CMD for stored commands?

Two errors I recorded to text,

windows cannot install required files. make sure all files required for installation are available and restart the installation. error code 0x80070037

This I found in forums as being a faulty install disk.

The other is:

explorer exe application error. the instruction at 0xfe6b128a referenced memory at 0xffffffff. the memory could not be read. click on ok to terminate the program

As I'm writing this the DVD drive seems to have kicked in and now up to 70% done.

Can this all be a memory problem where reseating and testing the memory (changing slots possibly)
will fix the problem?

I'll see what happens after the install completes. In all, a few hours have gone by.

Time passes and stall punked out again.

No Blue screen or the like but the error message I copied off says:

Install Windows
Windows could not prepare the computer to boot into the next phase of installation. To install Windows restart the installation.
(thr routine returns to the previous install now screen.)

I didn't try again.

I got a backup disk from another rig which is the same MSI motherboard type. It booted fine but seemed to run a check disk or some such as the throbber displayed.

I'll see what CPUZ says about memory and such. I just can't understand where the problem is.
Boot failure at the HD? I had run low level format and will do that again to start over.

It sounds like a faulty install disk or even the hard drive or it could be the dvd drive dirty

I had not considered a dirty dvd drive. Thanks for that direction.

As you have 4G of memory you should use Win 7 32 Bits.

Did you tested the HDD to see if it's healthy?

I've done some things. Have established the drive is not dead on another MSi. Redid the Low Level
and install of NTFS through Admin tools.

I switched the two Asus dvd drives I have. The one swirched onto media play MSI worked fine
for playing disks.

The one switched to program load is running now. Install started ok but I'm monitoring the
program loads again. What seems like a lot of small file loads has passed and at 28% things
are going.

One false start meant I have to recheck one of the test disks again for signs of life.

Ok I think this ends the search. Test disk shows ok in BIOS but when loaded on a PC with
Win7 it's running one of those long file corrupt routines.

I may be able to get it back with a wipe. Will check it in Crystal Disk for health.

I'll mark solved in a bit when I know things have settled down.

I'm on it. Will try to do the procedure again.
These are old HDs-- no smart info.

Now I see you have only 2G of memory. You should only install Windows 64 if you have more than 4G. So I strongly suggest you install Win 7 32bits.

- If you want to do a huge performance upgrade, you should buy a small SSD (128G) to install Windows and programs and use the HDD for data. It will cost you around US$25.
I have one of this. So far so good. PNY CS900 120GB 2.5" SATA III INTERNAL Solid State Drive (SSD) - SSD7CS900-120-RB - Newegg.com

- Buy more memory. 2x4G DDR3 1600 will cost you US$41
G.SKILL AEGIS 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-1600C11D-8GIS - Newegg.com

From the problems you described I would say you have a failing HDD drive or a bad Win 7 installation disk.
What is the brand of your HDD?

I see the good suggestions but will not respond to all. Some I have done like put on an SSD but only one
of my builds.

That problem disk is installed where I want it. It took a format from dvd in a reasonable amout of time.
Then running Crystal Disk Info shows it all in the blue at healthy and at a low temp.

I buy used HDs often. This was one of them. Even second hand it only shows 4500 hours which
could me someone dumpted it fast.

I simply don't know the function of Win7/chkdsk rewriting the whole disk for orphaned files
and how that happens.

As to Win7 32, once installed the HD would be on an MSI Phenom II x3. But the HD is extremely old, small (320Gb) and slow. Crystal Disk Mark shows system performing very badly.

One option is to upgrade to small SSDs which are now in the $21.00 (USD) range.

I'll go ahead and mark solved as a hard disk problem
