Hello. I have am having an issue the last few days while starting Windows 7 Professional. When I am not on my computer for several hours; I notice when Windows 7 starts, I am getting a black screen. Normally, I have my desktop up and running most of the time each day using it. Let me explain… …‘normally’ after I get the Windows’s animated flag to be created at the beginning of Windows 7 startup, I normally get a half-second black screen, then I get the Welcome/Logon screen with the default blue Windows 7 background. Yes, this is normal for all of us. What has been happening lately is that I get stuck at the half-second black screen, never getting to the Welcome/Logon screen and no mouse curser either. Again, this happens when I do not have my computer running for several hours. I have waited over 10 minutes while at the black screen and I never get out of it. I wait for the Welcome/Logon screen to appear and it doesn’t. I know from past experience, usually some sort of updating may be happening during this period before the Welcome/Logon screen… …but yet I KNOW WITH WINDOWS 7, the “updating” occurs FOLLOWING the Welcome/Logon screen with the messages in the middle of the Windows 7 blue background. (But no Windows Updates are happening however.) Now if I hit my reset button on my tower while I am in the black screen waiting, I am able to get to the Windows 7 Welcome/Logon screen after a reboot.

A couple of days ago after a long period of not having my computer running for a few hours, I did the reboot and that time I never got to the Welcome/Logon screen. I rebooted again, and I was able to logon into Windows 7 ‘safe mode’. After my desktop fully loaded in safe mode, I rebooted yet again, and I was able to get into Windows7’s Welcome/Logon screen in normal/regular mode. So far after a single reboot when this black screen happens, I am able to get into Window 7’s Welcome/Logon screen.

If I IMMEDIATELY reboot RIGHT NOW right after being on my Windows 7 desktop RIGHT NOW, I CAN GET into Windows 7 Welcome/Logon screen RIGHT AFTER a reboot – no issues here.

So what could be the cause? Any ideas what/why this is happening after longer periods of having my computer not running and unable to get the Windows 7 Welcome/Logon screen?

Please provide your suggestions or solutions if you have some idea what is going on.

Please reply.

Thank you!

Check your logs to see if they reveal anything, following the troubleshooting steps outlined in this post: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...-lags-every-couple-seconds-2.html#post1131640

Make sure your drivers are up to date by checking optional Windows Updates, then in Device manager Automatically update the Display driver: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/97061-driver-install-device-manager.html

Next check the Support Downloads webpage for your model computer or video card for a newer driver.

You could have boot sector corruption causing the issue. Try rebooting and press the F8 key repeatedly, choose Repair My Computer, click through to Startup Repair to run it a few times to see if it finds anything. If you don't have the Repair console on F8, make a Repair CD: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2083-system-repair-disc-create.html

If these fail and you have access to a Win7 installation DVD, try a http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html?ltr=R as a last resort before clean reinstalling to wiped HD: http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/125874-re-install-windows-7-a.html#post1086729
