Abomination. Do you think this of Windows 8 too?

I will beat this drum until I get a developers response from Microsoft. It is an absurd notion that we PC users will like Metro Desktop and no Start Menu/All Programs. I am an expert with Windows since 2002. I am 58 years old. I connect to computers around the world for remote support (Independent). I think the rude and uncaring introduction of Windows 8 WITHOUT the START MENU and a direct boot to Windows Desktop is outrageous, if not an abomination of Windows OS.

Microsoft! We all were weened on the simplicity of using the All Programs menu to send our shortcuts to the Desktop with EASE! We are able to access everything we need by clicking the Start Orb and using Search and accessing regedit, services.msc etc. We quickly access Documents, Pictures and can find every file, hidden, archived and read-only within seconds. So much more to say but I'm too hot under the collar and will curb the words I would really like to use.

Do those of you reading this agree with me that Microsoft should give the hardcore PC user the OPTION to disable Metro and activate Start Menu/All Programs?

You're right but fortunately I'm still using Windows 8 Custoer Preview on a second HDD. I boot to it now and then to see if there are any Windows Updates that will "give us back" the items I mentioned above, not yet and maybe never.

It's a good thing that Windows 7 will be around until 2020. I can truly see Windows 8 going belly-up like Windows Millenium.

Touch screen users will adapt but not PC users who rely on fast mousing and just plain old familiarity with the rock solid navigation fundamentals of Windows since Windows 95.

Thanks for the response. :geek:

Windows 7 end-of-support is January 14, 2020. Not 2024.

Windows lifecycle fact sheet - Microsoft Windows

Thanks for bring that up because I made a typo.

Now we all wait and see what happens with Windows 8.1 upgrade which is free. Suppose to available this June 2013. I'm still a Windows 7 fan but will want to see if they make W8 PC friendly.

I've already covered this in another post but to close out this topic 8.1 with it's faux start button that simply loads your favorite tiles again......well, that's just too funny! :D

Although your original post seems to be quite old, I would like to make a few comments. You bringing this thread back to life gives me an opportunity to do that.

   Note
In the future I would like to suggest you to post your Windows 8 opinions on our sister forums the Eight Forums as it suits the purpose better.

It is an absurd notion that we PC users will like Metro Desktop and no Start Menu/All Programs.
Absurd? I would like to say it's genius! I like the thinking behind Windows 8 concept: A flexible easy to customize Start Screen with adjustable tiles for everything I need, in an order I want to instead of clumsy Start Menu with alphabetical order where I need to dig deep to find what I need. If Microsoft had brought the traditional Start Menu back in Windows 8.1 that had been the first feature for me to disable.

I am an expert with Windows since 2002. I am 58 years old. I connect to computers around the world for remote support (Independent).
Not an expert as you, privately I have used every version of Windows. I mean every version, from Windows 1.0 which I got at Christmas 1985. At work, I have used and taught every version since Windows 3.0, writing my first instructional guides for Windows for Workgroups 3.11. I currently develop tailor made Windows 8 ToGo systems for small business.

I connect to 15 to 30 remote Windows 7 and 8 computers on a daily basis.

Windows 8 is the first Windows version you can carry in your pocket, ready to boot on almost every computer and that without any third party tools. Me, my colleagues and customers we have presented it usually like it very much.

I think the rude and uncaring introduction of Windows 8 WITHOUT the START MENU and a direct boot to Windows Desktop is outrageous, if not an abomination of Windows OS.
Thank you Microsoft for giving me more flexibility in using Windows by replacing the awkward and out-of-date Start Menu with Start Screen, it makes accessing the programs and applications I need so much faster and simpler. As an old school Windows veteran I also like that you brought back the possibility to boot directly to the desktop for those who'd prefer it.

Please in the future when bashing Windows 8 and / or 8.1, do not include me in your "We all were weened..." and similar statements. Better even if you could completely avoid speaking on behalf of me and lot of other users who like the new Windows concept.

Using Windows 8 and 8.1 I can find regedit, services.msc, access Documents, Pictures and can find every file, hidden, archived and read-only much faster than I ever could with Windows 7.

Do those of you reading this agree with me that Microsoft should give the hardcore PC user the OPTION to disable Metro and activate Start Menu/All Programs?
No.

Respectfully, not an expert like you but a keen Windows user,

Kari

I am not a member of Windows 8 forum because I have directed all my clients to Windows 7, and I have no intentions of using it as my workstation system.

Maybe Windows 9 or 10.....we'll just to have see.

Glad you like W8. You know how I feel.

Let's close this topic, it's really just going to spin it's wheels. ;)

Tiles are better? Heck, I even hate icons, let alone tiles! I feel they eat up too much room and are harder to scan horizontally than a simple, vertical list. I set most of my folders to list view to get rid of the stupid things (picture folders being the only exception).

I also feel the start menus is much easier to use than a bunch of multi-sized, clunky tiles taking up more than an entire screen. I have no trouble drilling down to what I'm looking for in the Start Menu since it's a concise, easy to read list, even for my old, trifocal assisted eyes. Alphabetical order has worked just fine for me all my life.

The Win 8 UI is ideal for phones and tablets but PCs and all but the tiniest laptops? I don't think so.

No self-proclaimed windows expert is going to convince me that Windows 8 isn't the best of both worlds. For those that like the Start screen, with it's tiles and "modern" apps they can choose to use that, for those like me that prefer the traditional desktop, a single click is all that is required (and even that is eliminated with 8.1). Some people may even prefer to stay in the middle using what they like from both interfaces.

I personally don't miss or need the Start button and don't understand why someone that is familiar with windows would still require it as there are many different ways to provide it's functionality. With desktop shortcuts, quick launch, items pinned to the Task bar, tool bars, application folders, etc... windows itself provides many different avenues to supplant the Start button. For those that need more than what is provided by windows itself, there are quite a few 3rd party apps like Classic Shell or Stardock.

IMO, there are way too many people whining about Win 8 given the fact that it is not significantly different from Win 7. I feel the hatred for it is totally unfounded. It's flexible enough to run with either a touchscreen interface or the traditional desktop we are all familiar with, so what's the problem?

Everybody has right to an opinion, you as well as I.

I do not like touch screen, using it only on mobile phones but never on computers, yet the UI of Windows 8 and especially 8.1 is to me so easy and flexible to use both on laptops and desktops alike with a good scroll mouse and keyboard, that I find myself constantly wondering why it took so long for Microsoft to introduce this clever system on Windows.

My PC usage has become clearly faster and better organized since I moved over to Windows 8.

If Windows 8 or now 8.1 would allow Transparency and windows snap it would be getting better reviews,
I've never used 8 or 8.1 so I could be mistaken about the above missing,
I believe as most that the Metro screen is fairly ugly and does not show much imagination,
I wouldn't say that about Windows 8/ 8.1 in general but the appearance is what Microsoft is selling.
Winning or Loosing ?
I can say I haven't taken the plunge yet so with that I would say Microsoft has not won the sell test yet ;)

If Windows 8 or now 8.1 would allow Transparency and windows snap it would be getting better reviews...

Besides the Start Menu (which can be replaced but why bother when Win 7 itself works just fine), AeroSnap and AeroPeek are the features I would miss most. I can't help but wonder if Win 8's increased speed comes from the features that were stripped when they were making Win 8.

I wonder where you get your information? Quite honestly I have not very much respect for opinions based on rumors, clear misunderstandings or information solely without personal experience like "I think I have heard...".

For those users now thinking not to test Windows 8 or 8.1 based on the wrong information about these two vital features of Windows: I like and use both AeroPeek(*) and AeroSnap(*) constantly on my Windows 8 and 8.1 rigs. Both features exist natively on Windows 8.

(*) = Not sure if the name of these features still is AeroPeek and AeroSnap, but the features themselves work on Windows 8 exactly as on Windows 7.

Post a tutorial of such features,
Beside Transparency is part of Windows glass and it's what makes Icons/ apps clear so you can see your Desktop background something people would rather see and Not a bunch of colored blocks.

Thanks Dude now that's helpful and confirms my likes of windows 7 is gone.

I've never understood why anyone would want to see the desktop. Instead of transparent icons, I hide all the icons on the desktop and don't even use a wallpaper because I spend exactly zero amount of my time looking at the desktop. I use Aerosnap and Aeropeek on my Win 8 machine and the ability to preview the desktop is there (off by default) but I have no use for that.

It's interesting that people that haven't even tried Win 8 can be so opposed to it.
