Hello guys.As you can see I'm new here and it's nice to meet you all.Let me start with the beginning.
biggrin.gif
I have a laptop running windows 7 and I'm playing an online game in which you can stay online afk and earn money and stupid things like this.I want to leave my laptop on overnight but I'm afraid of overheating and shorthening the its life .I have read a few things about sleep mode and hibernation mode but I didn't understand too much(I'm kinda noob when talking about computers so I came here to ask some experienced and cool guys like u ^_^).So the main things I would like my laptop to do:
*reduce the heat
*keep the internet connection(which is needed since I am playing an online game
*keep the game running
*reduce the ventilation
(*eventually work with the LCD screen down)
I'm waiting for answers.Have a nice day!

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

A Laptop's hardware temperature reaches an equilibrium after about 15 minutes or so depending on the ambient temperature, fan efficiency etc. It doesn't keep on rising. You can therefore keep the Laptop on for the night and nothing would go wrong.

There is software, both free and shareware, that can keep track of the critical temperatures inside the Laptop and can shut it down if the temperature gets critical. One such software that was earlier freeware but has now become shareware that I like the best is HDD Temperature 4.0.25 that you can download from http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HDD-Temperature.shtml.

Microsoft could easily have included a free gadget to monitor the computer temperatures but unfortunately they did not as I could not find one.

PS: A good free Monitor that I have found for you can be downloaded from http://download.cnet.com/HWMonitor/3000-2094_4-10793486.html. The download is from SoftTonic. Be careful during the download process because SoftTonic would install bloatware by default unless you turn it off. HWMonitor has a shareware Pro version too.

Hello Martin and welcome to Seven Forums.

Another consideration is to make sure there's ample ventilation underneath the laptop. Some folks use a laptop cooling pad while others simply elevate the laptop and position a small portable fan nearby to help the laptop fans dissipate heat buildup.

Thanks for answering guys but I was actually more interested in the first part of what I said. How can I use my laptop at the lowest performance(just to run that game and keep the connection)?I'd also like it to stay on even if the LCD dispay is down:)

you need to go to control panel /power settings and select what the laptop does when you close the lid ,
select "do nothing".

Martin Welcome to SevenForums,
your laptop has 3 basic "power plans":
Power Saver
Balanced
High Performance.

Yep, Power Saver is best for low temps.
WIN + X | Battery Status section | choose Power Saver in the box (default setting is Balanced)
WIN=key with the Microsoft logo on top.

Another heat generator because it is the greatest consumer of power in a laptop is the display.
WIN + X | Display section | slide the slider to the lowest level acceptable to you.

Do not block any of the vents or openings on your laptop, especially any on the bottom. This is probably the greatest sin commited by laptop users.

Every 3 months, take a can of compressed air and blow air into all openings. This helps to get dust out.

That's the major power points.

Now to keep your internet connection going:
Here the important point is to make sure that Win 7 doesn't power down your hardware to save power.

I'll give a couple of examples:
WIN | type DEVMGMT.MSC | expand Modems | right-click on your modem | Properties item | Power Management tab | uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device | checkmark Allow this device to wake the computer.

Look for the Power Management tab on any device that you don't want going to sleep on you. Be sure to check any USB hubs/ports that you need to not go to sleep.

WIN | type POWER OPTIONS | Change plan settings for your selected plan | Change advanced power settings | expand USB Settings | expand USB selective suspend setting | On battery: select Disabled and Plugged in: select Disabled | expand Sleep | expand Allow Wake Timers | set both to Disabled (strange but true) | expand Wireless Adapter Settings | expand Power Saving Mode | set On battery and Plugged In to Maximum Performance | OK button

You get the idea. Have fun.

personally i would only blow air into the intake vents as this ought to push out the exhaust vents, blowing into the outake/exhaust vent could blow crap back in.

Elevating the laptop to get more air underneath, or using a cooling pad, is not to be ignored. I do it faithfully and my laptops last 10 years.

You can google the make and model of your laptop to watch a video on how to clean it out. Do this every few years. This is the best video I've found:

I would monitor the temps closely when closing the lid by using a monitor or just checking periodically as closing the lid can hold heat in.

Martin,
Glad that we could be of assistance.

Hello again.I have asked in this thread how to make my laptop not to shut down when I close the lid and I found out that I just have to change a set from control pannel. Now the online game I play keeps running while the lid is closed but after I open the lid again and I click on my game I get white screen.Any idea how to solve this? Thanks:)

That depends on the game. I was in this situation a while back when I was still playing MMOs too. Some games just plain don't like the laptop screen shutting off when they have focus, but most can behave especially if you set to play in windowed mode instead of full screen. Try alt-tabbing to something else before closing the lid for the night and leaving it running, so when you reopen the lid, just alt-tab back to the game.
