Hi

I accidentally deleted my appdata folder but almost as soon as I saw this I hit cancel so the process was interrupted after 4 seconds or so . There were no files in thrash bin afterwards. Does this mean that the files were never deleted or that the files that were deleted up until I hit cancel went poof without ending up in the thrash bin? I'm running W7 64-bit Home Premium. As far as I can tell everything works. I'm just afraid that some vital files went missing.

Not quite, I might have been unclear. I hit cancel after 3-4 seconds so the delete process was never completed. The appdata folder was never gone from my harddrive. What I was wondering was whether the actual deleting takes place after the indicator is done or if it deletes from the get go.

English isn't my native language so I don't know how to put it.

I guess I'm wondering if the files (if it deletes from the get go) that are being deleted before I hit cancel in the middle of the process is gone forever or if Windows if it's interrupted just puts them back where they were.

I downloaded and ran the program you suggested but I couldn't tell if single important files were missing. There were so many, most had older dates.

If everything running fine then I would not worry about it. Most likely delete after completion

Hello FZR600R
Windows has to check it has permission to delete items, then it deletes each file and folder, one at a time. If you have a lot of files and folders, this can take several seconds, and their location might be in different places on the hard disk drive. If you have interrupted this process, then likely some files and folders got deleted, and some were saved from this deletion.

Shouldn't the files that got deleted (if any) have ended up in recycle bin?

Everything seems to work, i restored the folder from a previous version which strangely was just 1/4 of the size. The version was from last week.

I think various programs make entries in AppData as you run them, so you can expect the folder to grow by itself back to the previous size.

Yes, if (any) items were deleted, then they should end up in the Recycle Bin.

The thing to do is Open Recycle Bin, then click on the Original Location Tab.

This will automatically sort the items in the Recycle Bin according to their Folder location.

Then all you need do, is scroll down until you can see C:\Users\<user name>\AppData in the Original Location Column.

It looks something like this:
Recycle Bin.PNG

If no items were deleted, then nothing will show at that Original Location and at that Date Deleted.

I restored from a savepoint a little over a month old. Once I was done with that I right-clicked on appdata and choose restore an earlier copy. What's the difference between that and using shadowcopy?

Afterwards the new appdata was much smaller.

Shadow Copy is a technology included in Microsoft Windows that can create backup copies or snapshots of computer files or volumes, even when they are in use. It is implemented as a Windows service called the Volume Shadow Copy service.
